Chief Executive Officer

Shelter Movers is a national, volunteer-powered charitable organization providing moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. We collaborate with local businesses and community agencies to support people, primarily women and children, as they transition to a life free of violence. Every year, in collaboration with community partners, our volunteer teams contribute tens of thousands of hours across Canada to support people transitioning to lives free of violence and abuse.

PURPOSE OF YOUR ROLE

We are seeking a strategic and passionate leader to serve as our next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to guide the organization into its next phase of growth and impact. Reporting directly to the board of directors, the CEO will provide executive leadership for all aspects of the organizational operations, fund development, public advocacy, financial stewardship and strategic growth.

The ideal candidate has a proven track record leading a successful not-for-profit organization, ideally with national reach and demonstrated commitment to the gender-based violence (GBV) sector. You are able to advocate for the organization with external stakeholders, staff and volunteers to sustain and grow our impact nationally.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Leadership and Culture

Lead, coach, and support the leadership team to manage a geographically distributed team of staff and volunteers to deliver operational excellence in the communities we serve.
Foster a healthy organizational culture rooted in accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, inclusion, and safety.
Ensure appropriate oversight of organizational performance, financial sustainability, compliance, and risk management with accountability to the board.

Strategic Leadership & Governance

With the board, establish a strategic plan that creates the framework for delivering on our mission over the next 3-5 years.
Create an annual operating plan and budget, supported by key metrics, to manage and report on organizational performance to the board and stakeholders.
Develop and sustain effective governance practices and maintain strong relationships with the board.
Establish key operating metrics and manage organizational performance against strategic goals and key performance indicators.
Proactively manage organizational, operational and financial and reputational risks and recommend appropriate strategies to the board.

Fundraising, Philanthropy & Revenue Growth

Set the fundraising strategy and cultivate a sustainable philanthropic culture with support from the board, staff, and community partners.
Champion a culture of donor stewardship, accountability, and impact reporting.
Support the development and execution of national fundraising campaigns and revenue-generating initiatives.
Maintain and nurture meaningful relationships with major donors, corporate partners, foundations, and government funders to expand organizational capacity and impact.

External Relations, Advocacy & Public Profile

Serve as the primary representative and spokesperson for Shelter Movers with donors, community partners, government and the media.
Build and maintain strong relationships with government officials, sector leaders, corporate executives, media, and community organizations.
Increase national awareness of Shelter Movers through strategic communications and thought leadership.
Advocate for issues affecting survivors of gender-based violence and strengthen organization’s influence within the sector.
Identify opportunities that enhance the organization's reputation, visibility, and strategic partnerships.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Experience leading successful not-for-profit organizations, particularly with a national reach
Proven track record of building and leading high-performing teams of staff and volunteers
Demonstrated commitment to work in the GBV sector
Experience developing and managing strategic plans with board, staff and stakeholders
Proven track record of robust operational and financial management
Experience creating fund development strategies and cultivating donor relationships
Exceptional fundraising and major gift development experience with a demonstrated history of securing significant philanthropic revenue.
Experience developing a network of community partners and supporters to extend impact
Executive-level communication and media relations, including public speaking, presentations, media interviews, and storytelling.
Outstanding relationship-building abilities with donors, corporate partners, government representatives, foundations, and community leaders.
Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and trauma-informed leadership.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Knowledge of the gender-based violence sector, particularly women's shelters.
Advanced understanding of gender studies, including anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and intersectional frameworks affecting survivors of abuse.
Existing relationships with philanthropic leaders, corporate executives, foundations, and government funding bodies.
Experience engaging with provincial and federal government stakeholders.
Experience leading national awareness campaigns or advocacy initiatives.
Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
Willingness to travel nationally as needed (10%).

ROLE DETAILS

JOB TYPE: Full-Time | Permanent
COMPENSATION: $130,000 - $160,000
LOCATION: Canada / Remote
HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours per week (with some evening and weekend availability as needed)
