About DocuPet
As the official pet registration provider for more than 250 jurisdictions, DocuPet is the largest and fastest growing pet registration platform in North America.
Our proprietary platform consolidates all pet information into a single place and provides the services for pet owners, community members and animal shelters to ensure pets can be reunited quickly if they become lost.
Beyond our platform, DocuPet offers specialized pet tags, an AI-powered pet tracker, lost pet alert system, and will soon be launching a first-of-its-kind pet parenting mobile app - all aimed to ensure every pet in North America is registered and that each has a safe and happy home.
Our work is very important. More than 6 million pets enter animal shelters every year. Just 10% of those animals are returned to their owners. Effective registration, pet identification, reunification tools, and animal shelter resources, all provided by DocuPet, is the solution that will measurably reduce shelter intakes while providing significant new funding for animal welfare organizations.
About this role
We're hiring a Software Engineering Manager to lead our E-Commerce team, reporting to the Senior Software Engineering Manager of the External Customers group.
You'll own the team responsible for the entire commerce surface: product browsing, sales, payments, inventory, fulfillment, and analytics. The platform has a strong foundation — the next chapter is bigger. We're building A/B testing, personalization and targeting, product reviews, bundles, multi-payment support, split order fulfillment, advanced shipping, tax automation, and deeper transaction analytics.
We operate in an AI-first environment. AI tooling is a force multiplier across the engineering organization, and this role is responsible for setting the bar for what that looks like in E-Commerce — both in how the team builds (compressing the build → test → ship loop) and in what the team ships (personalized, intelligent, and increasingly agentic shopping experiences).
What you'll do
- Anchor in real problems faced by pet parents, shelters, and partners, and translate that empathy into commerce experiences that actually move conversion, retention, and revenue
- Own the technical strategy and roadmap for the E-Commerce platform end-to-end
- Architect and modernize core commerce services: order lifecycle, payment orchestration, refunds, reconciliation
- Ship AI-powered commerce experiences — personalization, recommendations, search, merchandising, and agentic / conversational shopping flows
- Set the standard for AI-assisted development across design, implementation, review, and experimentation velocity
- Build the experimentation substrate: A/B testing, feature flags, and analytics instrumentation that make data-driven decisions cheap
- Recruit, mentor, and level up full-stack engineers — including hiring and coaching for AI fluency
- Stay hands-on: write specs, review code and architecture, unblock the team where it matters
What we're looking for:
Technical foundation
- Significant full-stack web experience, ideally on E-Commerce or transaction-driven platforms
- Proven track record building or modernizing E-Commerce systems — checkout, order management, payments, inventory, fulfillment
- Strong command of reactive, server-driven UI stacks (Symfony UX, Laravel Livewire, or similar)
- Experience with utility-first design systems (Figma + Flowbite + Tailwind preferred)
- Deep familiarity with payment gateways, tax APIs, and shipping integrations
- Strong with relational databases (MySQL, MariaDB, or similar)
- Clear opinions on E-Commerce architecture patterns — event-driven order pipelines, headless commerce, and the tradeoffs between them
- Comfortable with A/B testing frameworks, analytics implementation, and data-driven experimentation
- Agile delivery experience (Scrum/Kanban, JIRA)
- Strong ability to reason about and debug systems without over-reliance on AI tools
AI-first engineering
This is core to how we operate. As an Engineering Manager, you are responsible for shaping how AI is adopted, scaled, and governed across your team. You ensure AI is used as a force multiplier for speed and quality, while maintaining strong engineering discipline, system integrity, and accountability for what is shipped.
- You define and evolve how AI is used across the team’s software development lifecycle (planning, implementation, review, testing, and debugging), ensuring consistent, high-quality adoption
- You establish clear standards and guardrails for AI usage, particularly in critical systems (e.g. billing, eligibility, core business logic), ensuring deterministic correctness where required
- You coach engineers on how to effectively use AI tools, improving their ability to generate, evaluate, and refine AI-assisted outputs to production standards
- You create scalable patterns for AI usage (prompting strategies, validation approaches, review workflows) so gains are repeatable across the team, not isolated to individuals
- You ensure all AI-generated code and artifacts meet the same bar as human-written work, with strong expectations around correctness, readability, test coverage, and long-term maintainability
- You identify opportunities to embed AI into team workflows (code review, test generation, debugging, documentation) and measure the impact on speed, quality, and developer experience
- You drive a culture of ownership and accountability, where engineers can fully explain and defend any AI-assisted work they ship
- You guide the team in distinguishing between deterministic and non-deterministic problem spaces, preventing inappropriate use of AI in critical paths without sufficient safeguards
- You proactively identify risks and failure modes in AI-assisted systems (hallucination, inconsistency, partial correctness) and implement mitigation strategies at the team and system level
- You continuously evaluate new AI tools and approaches, making pragmatic decisions about adoption based on real impact, not hype
Engineering leadership
- Track record leading complex technical projects with successful outcomes
- Proven ability to build teams — hiring, coaching, career development, and culture
- Hands-on Engineering Manager who reads and reviews code; an engineer and architect first, manager second
- Strong sense of ownership; you solve problems rather than just shipping solutions
Communication & judgment
- Translate complex technical concepts effortlessly for technical and non-technical audiences
- Manage multiple priorities and context-switch in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Make tradeoffs explicit and revisit decisions as new context emerges
Nice to have
- Multi-tenant E-Commerce platforms or marketplaces
- Internal tools for refunds, adjustments, or order reconciliation
- Deep server-driven UI experience in the Symfony UX stack — Live Components, Stimulus, Turbo
- In-house Design System work with Figma + Tailwind
- Shipping production AI/ML features in a commerce context — recommendations, search, personalization, or agentic flows
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical insurance including Health, Dental and Vision
- Flexible PTO
- Fully remote
