Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator

Creekstone Care Centre is a modern long term care home, purpose-built for 180 seniors and conveniently located right by Second Narrows Bridge on Oxford Street in North Vancouver. We are seeking a full time Recreation & Volunteer Coordinator to passionately contribute to the delivery of quality of life programs to Residents by focusing on creating joy through connections, engagement and feeling valued.
This position combines two roles related to recreation management and volunteer engagement. As a Recreation Coordinator, the RVC supports the Recreation Manager, as needed, and assists with implementing, delivering and evaluating recreation programs. As a Volunteer Coordinator, the RVC develops, implements and evaluates volunteer and community engagement programs to enrich connections and building a diverse network of volunteers. This position directly supervises the volunteers and assists in supervising Recreation Assistants, including decisions with hiring, performance evaluations and progressive discipline, as needed, up to and including termination.
As a member of the Leadership Team, the RVC provides direct and indirect support in the delivery of recreation and volunteer programs within the allocated budget and according to the principles of Person and Family–Centred Care (PFCC). Promotes a culture of Person and Family-Centred Care (PFCC) by seeking input and engagement in program design, implementation and review including volunteer programs.
· Implements, delivers and evaluates recreation programs, including ambulation, as needed and in support of the duties of the Recreation Manager.
· Collaborates with the Social Worker & Wellness Manager for Resident leisure opportunities outside the home, as part of supporting the recreation needs.
· Develops, implements and evaluates a wide variety of volunteer programs and community partnerships (including student programs) for the benefit of Residents and Families. Ensure recreation programs receive volunteer support, as needed.
· Considers the needs of individual Residents as well as the needs of the collective groups to provide meaningful engagement and create joy in life and aging.
· Establishes new partnerships with inter-generational community groups and organizations to enrich connections, promote interest and public awareness and encourage participation.
· Tracks and maintains strong relationships with all community connections and related records for all Residents.
· Promotes equity, diversity and inclusion by working with the recreation team and community groups to provide a wide variety of multi-cultural, spiritual programming.
· Challenges traditional thinking on volunteering and pursues innovation and engagement.
· Promotes the joy in life and aging on social media, working with recreation and volunteer team to highlight signature programs and special events.
· Create newsletters with input from recreation team and GM and in consultation with the Recreation Manager
· Provides support with special events including program/event advertisement, supplies and delivery of program/event.
As the Volunteer Coordinator, HR actions include:
o Develops volunteer job descriptions including roles and expectations. Considers Residents and Families as potential volunteer candidates.
o Attracts, screens and selects applicants for volunteer placements in defined volunteer jobs by reviewing application forms, conducting interviews, performing reference checks, and evaluating applicants’ suitability for the program. Ensures licensing regulations are met including criminal record checks and required immunizations.
o Provides orientation and training, assessing volunteer performance and providing feedback on an ongoing basis.
o Schedules and coordinates volunteer assignments by liaising with Team Members, matching volunteer skills with opportunities, preparing schedules and maintaining appropriate volunteer databases.
o Ensures information is appropriately communicated with and about Volunteers to support a successful program.
o Celebrates and recognizes contributions. Communicates information to Volunteers, holding meetings as required.
· Attends meetings, at the request of the Recreation Manager in order to obtain, share and distribute information related to recreation, event planning and/or volunteer services, as required. Participates on Committees, as needed.

Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
· Completion of a Recreation Therapy Program or Activity Assistant diploma or Certificate.
· Experience in growing and/or managing a volunteer program including two years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
· Two years recent relevant experience in Long Term Care.
· At least one year of recent relevant experience working with individuals with dementia
· Experience in managing people would be an asset.
· Basic computer skills (including MS Office, specifically Outlook, Excel and Word).
Skills and Abilities
· Ability to communicate effectively in the English language (both orally and written).
· Good interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with the various individuals involved in providing holistic care in a flexible Resident focused environment.
· Demonstrated leadership competencies, and the ability to act as a role model in creating a collaborative and harmonious working atmosphere with healthy, effective relationships.
· Must be in good health, physically able to perform repetitive tasks, lift, squat, bend, stand and walk as required and to meet Provincial immunization and tuberculosis regulations.
· Proven time management skills including the ability to plan, set priorities, and organize work.
