The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Animal Services Supervisor, this role is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of the facility, and the proper care of all animals in the custody of Animal Services and those animals taken to associated Vet Clinics. This role monitors the welfare and behavior of animals in the facility and ensures that all work-related policies and procedures are adhered to. As the Volunteer Assistant, Kennel, you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:
- Ensure the kennel facilities are sterile and disinfected and maintain overall cleanliness of the facility
- Perform general housekeeping duties including laundry, clean and disinfect kennels and outdoor enclosures, cat cages, grooming area, kitchen, storage areas, washroom, and office etc.
- Seasonal maintenance of outdoor areas including snow removal and salting of walkways, entrances and exits
- Feed animals, clean food bowls and litter boxes, refill water dishes, prepare food (including special diets) and hand feed animals if necessary
- Exercise and socialize animals within the care of Animal Services
- Assist with the care of animals by administering medication, special diets or treatments as directed by Supervisor
- Monitor and document animal health and behaviour and ensure immediate concerns are reported to the Supervisor
- Follow start of day and end of day procedures for Animal Services and ensure completion of all daily tasks and work assignments
- Participate in staff meetings and training programs as required
- Perform additional duties and undertakes special projects as assigned
- Be responsible to work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations; the Town of Caledon Health, Safety and Workplace Violence Policy and Procedures; as well as established industry guidelines
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a passionate professional currently enrolled in a post-secondary degree/diploma in Animal Care, Veterinary Assistant, or a closely related field. Our ideal candidate has minimum 1 year of related experience in an animal related field (animal shelter, pet store, groomer, veterinary clinic, etc.).
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to recognize and deal effectively with a diversity of animals, problems, and behaviours. We are seeking an individual with superior interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
The successful candidate for Volunteer Assistant, Kennel will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office and after hours (as required).
This position is an unpaid volunteer/co-op position.
Satisfactory passing of a vulnerable sector check, and proof of qualifications will be required of any successful candidate(s) for this position.
