What do you offer?
Reporting to the Fitness Coordinator/Supervisor, the Group Fitness Instructor Volunteer supports YMCA fitness and wellness programs by leading safe, engaging, and inclusive group fitness classes for members of all ages and fitness levels. The Group Fitness Instructor Volunteer presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times and ensures excellent customer service is provided to members and participants by proactively addressing concerns or issues and escalating them to the Coordinator of Fitness, Wellness, and Recreation as necessary. This position ensures that health and safety regulations, as well as YMCA policies and procedures, are upheld. The Group Fitness Instructor adheres to and ensures that the mission, purpose, image, and core values of the YMCA of the National Capital Region are conveyed to members, staff, and volunteers in every interaction.
Some of the tasks of this position include:
- Delivering group fitness classes to YMCA members and participants.
- Maximizing participation, motivation and involvement of YMCA members and participants.
- Continuously working to expand knowledge and expertise in the ever-evolving health and fitness industry.
- Providing quality customer service to YMCA members and participants.
What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:
Language
- Fluent in English, oral and written required
- French is an asset
Experience, Skills and Abilities
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR “C” certification
- Maintains a recognized Group Fitness Instructor certification for example YMCA, CALA, Can Fit Pro, OFC certifications
- Passion for fitness, health, and community wellness
- Ability to work with people of different ages and abilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to motivate and build rapport with diverse clients
- Excellent Customer Service Skills particularly as it relates to members experience
Additional Requirements:
- Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
- A Police Record check, not more than 6 months old is required. Police Records checks are reviewed on an individual basis and the offense(s) - if any - is considered in the decision-making process in relation to the requirement of working with children, therefore not eliminating all candidates with a record from being offered a position.
- Semi-annually, staff must complete the mandatory training for the protection of Children & Youth and submit the certificate of completion.
