The Inuulitsivik Health Centre (IHC) is dedicated to providing quality health and social services to the Nunavimmiut living in the seven communities along the Hudson Bay coast. Our needs are great this summer, with many births expected, and every midwife can make a real difference for families.

Employment Conditions – Substitute Midwife – Far North (Hudson Bay Coast Villages)
Salary:
- Between $41.47 and $58.86 per hour, depending on experience

- Retention bonus (no dependent) between $203.66 and $240.25 per week, depending on the village

Main Responsibilities – Substitute Midwife – Far North (Hudson Bay Coast Villages)
Each midwifery practice is adapted to the village it serves. Therefore, there are differences in how each village team manages its practice. Nevertheless, every midwife and student midwife in Nunavik is responsible for some core tasks.
These include:
- Provide comprehensive antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care: share responsibility for all aspects of perinatal care, according to level of experience and development of skills;
- Provide gynecological screening care and education for women from adolescence to menopause, including Pap smears, family planning counseling, administering and preparing various forms of contraception, STI counseling and treatment, breast self-exam, and common gynecological health issues;
- Provide newborn care and advice up to six weeks of age;
- Ensure continuity of care and provide updated reports to team members, substitute midwives, and any care provider consulted or partially referred;
- Equitably share on-call periods with other members of the midwife team;
- Assist in organizing and carrying out emergency transfers (Medevacs);
- Collect, prepare, and evaluate laboratory specimens according to maternity guidelines and protocols; treat and refer as needed;
- Lead and update prenatal group sessions—nutrition during pregnancy, common pregnancy issues, birth preparation, feeding during the first year of life, etc.;
- Participate in the development of public health programs and community education (e.g., health-related talks, radio programs on nutrition, FASD, AIDS, family violence circles, meetings with elders and youth...);
- Contribute to skill development and increased participation in all aspects of perinatal care by sharing knowledge and skills with student midwives, health workers, maternity workers, and other midwives;
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records;
- Collect and compile statistics;
- Participate in research projects;
- Participate in the daily maintenance and operation of the maternity ward—ordering supplies, checking and storing equipment, etc.;
- Be an active member of the Council of Physicians, Pharmacists, Dentists, and Midwives of the Health Centre;
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that includes other health care providers and community members and be accountable to them;
- Participate in and alternate membership on the Perinatal Committee (a subcommittee of the CMDPSF that meets weekly to review files, develop and update protocols, and other tasks);
- Participate in annual staff meetings and peer reviews, and help maintain good communication among team members;
- Participate in the orientation of new and substitute health workers, doctors, nurses, and midwives;
- Maintain participation in the Nunavik Midwives' Advisory Committee;
- Participate in the Nunavik midwives’ periodic teleconference chart review;
- Attend regional, national, and international conferences on midwifery practice and women's health;
- Contribute to the evaluation of care, training, skills, policies, and procedures from a midwifery practice perspective, in accordance with midwifery standards and the Inuulitsivik philosophy of maternity care;
- Serve pregnant women during labor and postpartum, according to their individual needs and to ensure their physical and emotional safety within the Inuulitsivik philosophy and practice protocols;
- Perform any other duties related to the responsibilities and functions decided by the maternity team that can help ensure culturally appropriate quality care, according to Inuulitsivik philosophy and practice and teaching principles;
- Travel to another maternity ward when necessary for service needs, as requested by the Director of Professional Services.
Requirements – Substitute Midwife – Far North (Hudson Bay Coast Villages)
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in midwifery practice
- Neonatal resuscitation certificate
- Obstetrical emergency certificate (dated less than three (3) years)
Experience:
- Three (3) years as a midwife
Other Requirements:
- Membership in the Ordre des sages-femmes du Québec
- Knowledge of Inuit culture
- Functional English
- French is an asset
- Inuktitut is an asset
