The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is a special operating agency within the Department of National Defence (DND). We work to ensure the safety of mariners in Canadian waters and protect Canada’s marine environment. We support Canada’s economic growth through the safe and efficient movement of maritime trade. We help to ensure our country’s sovereignty and security through our presence in Canadian waters. The CCG proudly serves 243,000 kilometers of Canada’s vast and rugged coastline, the longest coastline of any given country, and is one of the few federal agencies that provides direct, front-line services 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Conditions of employment

Security: Various Security Requirements

Strict adherence to the Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces Code of Values and Ethics - Canada.ca, Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector- Canada.ca, Directive on Conflict of Interest- Canada.ca, and DAOD 7021-1, Conflict of Interest - Canada.ca.

Willing and able to obtain a Health Canada medical certificate
Valid Class 5 Driver's license
Willing and able to travel on various means of transport including ships, small vessels and aircraft to remote locations and abroad, knowing that such travel may be frequent and seasonal
Willing and able to work overtime, be on call according to a schedule (day and night, seven days a week) and occasionally work weekends, in accordance with the collective agreement
Willing and able to work in potentially hazardous or adverse conditions such as those found in the marine environment and in remote locations
Willing and able to work in emergency situations
Willing and able to travel for extended periods on short notice
Possession of a valid Canadian Passport
Willing and able to wear the Canadian Coast Guard uniform
Willing and able to wear CSA approved personal safety equipment related to the job
Willing to safely and securely possess and operate government devices such as cell phones and laptop computers
Willing to give statements and/or testimony related to legal proceedings such as court or tribunals (Monitoring & Compliance only)

EDUCATION:

A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives (see Note 1).

Note:
The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are:

A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or
An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Candidates who already meet both of the following criteria must be accepted as meeting the secondary school diploma requirement:

Candidates who have achieved a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; and
Candidates who have been appointed or deployed for an indeterminate period to a position in the GT classification.

The opportunity to be assessed by at least one of the two employer-approved alternatives must be offered to candidates who have not previously met the secondary school diploma requirement.

Candidates who were appointed or deployed on an indeterminate basis using an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience meet the secondary school requirement for the GT classification only and must be reassessed for entry to other classifications on the basis of this alternative.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION AND OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:

Post-secondary education related to the duties of the position.
Any marine certification that exceeds the Pleasure Craft Operators course – e.g.: Rigid Hull Inflatable Operator Training (RIHOT), Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP).
Accredited qualifications as an instructor in areas such as first aid, exercise development and delivery, or adult education.
Valid Radio Operator’s Certificate (Maritime Commercial).
Valid Marine Emergency Duties - A3 Certificate.
Incident Command System (ICS) Certification.
Commercial Driver’s license.
Safety or Occupational related certification.

Experience working in incident or emergency response
Experience mentoring or supervising employees
Experience using the Incident Command System
Experience using GIS mapping software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, etc

Experience with Environmental Response Operations
Experience with basic mechanical skills related to the operation and maintenance of equipment such as small engines, generators, pumps, etc.

Experience with conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the “Canadian Shipping Act”
Knowledge of the “Wrecked Abandoned and Hazardous Vessels Act”
Ability to operate equipment such as forklifts, all-terrain vehicles, trucks with trailers, etc.
