About the team
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation team of accounting professionals oversee all accounting and financial activities, and establish financial policies, procedures, internal controls and reporting systems.

What you’ll do
The Manager, Accounting is responsible for overseeing the organization’s accounting operations and financial reporting to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness. This role leads and supports the accounting team, maintains effective internal controls and systems, and provides expert financial analysis, reporting, and advice to senior leadership. This position also ensures compliance with legislative and professional accounting standards, supports audit and budgeting processes, and contributes to continuous improvement of financial practices and controls.

Responsibilities include:

Manage the daily activities of the work unit so that work progresses in an orderly and efficient manner.
Develop and implement new procedures and internal controls to enhance the workflow.
Monitor work progress and take corrective action as required to ensure work meets required quantity, quality and timeliness standards.
Safeguard assets and accurate and timely recording of all transactions by ensuring compliance with internal controls.
Ensure financial reporting compliance with provincial and federal legislation, as well as with the CPA Canada Standards.
Utilize accounting standards and principles to compile and analyze financial information financial statements.
Apply professional judgment to determine estimates and accruals in the preparation of financial statements.
Manage the preparation of payroll and ensure compliance with provincial and federal legislation, including deadlines.
Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
Communicate and advise internal staff regarding chart of account changes and updates, including impact on financial reporting.
Ensure an accurate and timely year-end close.
Ensure the accurate and timely reporting of all monthly financial information, including review of financial information reported by other staff.
Ensure the daily banking requirements are met.
Support budget and forecasting activities.
Monitor and analyze the work within the unit to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources to maintain a high level of accuracy.
Advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
Respond to inquiries from senior management, managers, and controller regarding financial results and special reporting requests.
Work with controller to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit by managing and directing the preparation of information for the year-end audit.
Manage the accounting system hardware and software applications and collaborate with vendors to resolve issues.
Assist the controller with the development and implementation of accounting programs and systems.
Present the quarterly financial statements to the provincial executive and respond to any questions or comments.
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and conferences.
Provide back-up services for the controller and senior accountant and carry out other duties as assigned.
Lead the consistent delivery of accounting operations aligned with organizational objectives.
Develop and implement the annual accounting operational plan; monitor progress and adjust as needed.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the accounting unit to enhance efficiency, accuracy and responsiveness to organizational needs.
Provide oversight, coaching, and mentorship to accounting team members to ensure their success.
Assign workloads, monitor performance, and establish clear accountability for deliverables.
Support positive team culture and professional growth.
Address day‑to‑day people management issues in a timely manner.

What you’ll bring

An undergraduate degree and a professional accounting designation; combined with five years of progressively responsible experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
Knowledge of effective principles of supervision of staff and management of a small work unit.
Knowledge of Canadian Accounting Standards (IFRS, ASPE, Non-profit organizations and Pensions).
Knowledge of accounting for investments.
Demonstrated organizational skills in organizing own work.
Demonstrated ability to effectively handle work requiring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Demonstrated initiative in undertaking assignments and completing work within strict timelines.
Good analytical skills.
Superior interpersonal skills in dealing with people both within and outside the organization.
