Summary of Role
The Director of Museum Site and Assets is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the site operations and construction projects at the Britannia Mine Museum, ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient management of the physical museum site, historical assets, staff and resources. This includes overseeing site security, occupational health & safety, building & grounds maintenance, site construction, regulatory compliance and insurance.
This position also serves as the designated Mine Manager as per the Ministry of Mineral Exploration and Mining and is responsible for maintaining the integrity and safety of the mine tunnel and Mill #3 while managing museum operations, curatorial activities, and special projects.
The Director of Museum Site and Assets is responsible for the project management of on-site construction projects ensuring that projects are delivered on-time and on-budget. The Museum is currently undergoing a large capital expansion which will require specific attention to numerous ongoing projects.
Additionally, this role is the key liaison between the museum and the film industry, outside events, and site rental clients, ensuring a high level of engagement and operational success. The responsibilities outlined below may evolve as the needs of the museum change.
The Director of Museum Site and Assets will coordinate with the Executive Director and other department directors to operate within a satellite cross-functional organizational structure , where departments and teams are organized around key functions and strategically aligned goals, rather than being siloed. This structure fosters collaboration and flexibility, allowing each department to function autonomously while remaining deeply integrated with other areas of the museum.
Directors at the Britannia Mine Museum will service this structure by ensuring the following:
Leading Decentralized Yet Unified Departments : While departments are led independently, they work in close coordination with one another, ensuring that operations are aligned with the overall mission and vision of the museum. Each team is empowered to take ownership of its goals and functions, with clear communication and collaboration across departments.
Leading Cross-Functional Teams : Key projects and initiatives will often be managed by coordinating cross-functional teams that bring together expertise from various departments (e.g., marketing, curatorial, site, programs) to drive innovation, solve problems, and achieve shared objectives.
Taking a Flexible and Adaptive Approach : This structure enables the museum to remain agile, with teams able to respond quickly to changing needs, trends, and opportunities. Department directors and team leaders work together to align resources, share insights, and maintain focus on both short-term and long-term goals in the overall strategic plan.
Conducting Performance Analysis and Reporting: Monitor, analyze and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to the museum site including: safety, site usage, upkeep and preservation of buildings, assets, capital projects, the collection and artifacts. Use relevant data for continuous improvement. Be prepared at all times to report to or present to the Executive Director and/or the Board Executive and/or Board M&O Committee and/or other committees of the Board and/or the Leadership Team and/or the broader team.
Key Responsibilities:
1) Site Operations Management:
Oversee the daily operational management of the Britannia Mine Museum site and surrounding grounds, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
Oversee the supervision of the site maintenance team, including custodial, landscaping, and general upkeep of the facility, grounds, and tunnel & mill sites.
Oversee and contribute to all health & safety elements (hazards, risk levels, committees, training, safe work procedures and safety processes on site).
Ensure compliance with all relevant safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
Be prepared for continual risk management and risk assessment.
Develop and implement operational strategies to optimize facility management, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Ensure the Museum has the required insurance, permissions and variances to operate the site.
Serve as the Mine Manager, overseeing the safety, maintenance, and operational aspects of the tunnel and mill building, ensuring compliance with mining legislation and regulations.
2) Museum Asset Management:
Oversee the management, maintenance and scheduled upkeep of the museum’s grounds and buildings.
Oversee the management and preservation the museum’s historical assets, including buildings, exhibits, artifacts, and equipment, ensuring they are properly stored, maintained, and displayed.
Ensure that preventative maintenance is being scheduled and completed according to a written schedule (approved by the Executive Director and Board on an annual basis).
Collaborate with the Curator to develop plans for the care, restoration, and display of assets within the museum.
Maintain detailed records of all museum assets in conjunction the Curator, including acquisition, conservation, and condition reports.
3) Project Management:
o Oversee all construction projects at the museum including capital projects, ongoing construction & exhibits.
o Project Management of capital and ongoing projects at the museum.
o Provide ongoing, regular project updates to the Museum’s Executive Director including updates on progress, project challenges or potential for cost overrun.
o Coordination of external workers including: project managers, architects, builders, contractors and tradespeople, ensuring they meet all occupational health & safety requirement and that they receive specific training on site emergency procedures.
o Ensure the Museum has all the required permits, insurance and resources prior to all project starts.
4) Curatorial Oversight:
Supervise and support the Curator, ensuring that the museum’s exhibitions and educational programs align with the institution’s mission.
Provide resources and guidance for special exhibitions, events, and educational programs, collaborating with the Curator on curatorial activities.
Collaborate with the Curator to develop and manage the museum’s collection policies, conservation efforts, and exhibition schedules.
5) Liaison for Film Industry, Special Events, and Site Rentals:
Act as the primary point of contact for the film industry, negotiating and coordinating film shoots and media production activities at the museum site including contract management.
Oversee the planning, execution, and management of special events such as tours, educational programs, fundraisers, and private events (e.g.- industry functions, mine rescue competition, corporate functions).
Manage site rentals, contracts, scheduling, and ensuring that rentals are executed smoothly with minimal disruption to museum operations.
Foster relationships with external organizations, vendors, and clients to maximize the museum’s use as a filming and event venue, ensuring alignment with the museum's brand and mission.
6) Leadership and Staff Development:
Cultivate a strong leadership pipeline by developing and mentoring managers, supervisors equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and skills to lead teams effectively and deliver results.
Provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to all maintenance and curatorial staff (6-10 staff), including direct oversight of the curatorial and maintenance teams.
Establish clear performance goals, conduct performance reviews, and provide professional development opportunities.
Oversee the Shift Boss program at the Museum.
Promote a positive, inclusive and relatable workplace culture where staff members are encouraged to contribute ideas, develop skills, and provide exceptional service.
Collaborate with the Executive Director and the executive team to create and implement strategic initiatives for the museum’s operations, growth, and sustainability.
7) Budgeting and Financial Oversight:
Develop and manage operational and project budgets with the Executive Director, ensuring that expenses align with available resources.
Oversee procurement of museum expenditures related to the site by either going to tender or obtaining at least three quotes for services/products.
Obtain quotes as required for any purchases over $5,000.
Identify cost-saving opportunities and manage resources efficiently to meet financial goals.
Oversee financial transactions related to all purchases including equipment, site rentals, events, and external partnerships ensuring accuracy and timely payment (on schedule).
Collaborate with the Executive Director and other leadership team members to secure funding or grants for capital projects.
8) Community Engagement and Partnership Development:
Represent the museum in local, regional, national and international forums, building relationships with stakeholders and partners in the film, event, and tourism industries.
Develop partnerships that enhance the museum’s presence and attract diverse audiences.
Cultivate partnerships within the mining industry and mining community including the provincial Ministry of Mineral Exploration and Mining to ensure that the museum is representing the industry.
Actively contribute to fundraising and community outreach initiatives to support museum programming and operations.

Some familiarity with the unique challenges and opportunities involved in managing a heritage site or historical museum.
Qualifications:
Education:
Diploma or Bachelor’s degree or one or more of the following areas: Heritage Resources Management, Cultural Resources Management, Building Operations and Management, Architecture, Operations Management, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a related field (Master’s degree preferred) OR equivalent combination of skills and experience.
Gold Seal Certifications (GSC) are considered an asset.
Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is considered a strong asset.
Experience:
Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in museum operations, facilities management, construction, project management or a related field.
Minimum 3- 5years of proven project management,
Proven experience in a leadership or management role, with oversight of staff and operations.
Prior experience overseeing safety, operational, and regulatory compliance in a mining, construction or heritage environment (or closely related industry).
Experience in liaising with the film industry.
