Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Practice as a member of the interdisciplinary team at the T. Roy Adams Regional Centre for Dementia Care in accordance with Regulated Health Professions Act, Gerontological Nurses Association (GNA) Standards, The Long-Term Care Homes Act, and the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario. In keeping with the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of Seniors Services, provide professional nursing care to residents/clients with complex disorders (i.e., emotional, behavioural, cognitive, psychological, physical) and support to their families and other caregivers.

Through a collaborative approach, offer direction and assistance to the Registered Practical Nurse and Personal Support Workers. Participate in, support and facilitate interdisciplinary, resident/client-centred care to achieve desired resident/client quality of life outcomes, in collaboration with other professionals and community health agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Certificate from an approved College, or a diploma from an approved University, in a recognized Registered Nursing program
Completion of a recognized training program in Dementia Care (or equivalent recognized program), which includes: Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA), Positive Approach to Care, Pain & Behaviours, DementiAbility and DementiAbility Communication Tips & Tricks, and PIECES (Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Capability, Environment and Social),
- If training not currently complete, must finish within 1 year of hire
- Must maintain Dementia Care training program requirements on an ongoing basis
Certificate in Dementia Care (or acceptable equivalent certificate course) from a recognized Community College an asset

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 6 months of current (within the last 3 years) experience as a Registered Nurse in long-term care nursing
Demonstrated knowledge of the Fixing Long-term Care Act and regulations under the Act
Familiarity with standardized assessment tools (e.g. Folstein, Cornell, Cohen-Mansfield, DOS, etc.)
Excellent theoretical knowledge and practice skills in dementia care, and community/long-term care consultation
Knowledge of resident/client safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident/client safety practices
Knowledge of current psychiatric medications
Knowledge of behavioural assessment and interventions
Demonstrated knowledge of the requirements under the Occupational health & Safety Act and its regulations necessary to act as a competent supervisor
Strong background in long-term care, community consultation and geriatric mental health

SKILLS

Demonstrated strong supervisory and leadership skills
Ability to perform comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessment and rapport with resident/client population
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated interest, compassion, respect and patience in their work with residents/clients and their families, including clients with complex disorders (i.e., emotional, behavioural, cognitive, psychological, physical)
Demonstrated flexibility and resourcefulness in achieving resident/client quality of life outcomes
Ability in conflict resolution and crisis intervention
Demonstrated documentation and computer skills, including the ability to use nursing related applications
Demonstrated enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to cope with change
Commitment to resident/client-centred care and compassion for the resident/client population

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
In accordance with the Corporate Policy and applicable Legislation/Regulation(s), the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Record Check and submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as complete any subsequent declaration or check as required by legislation/Act, regulation, and/or policy
Compliance with any requirements, including immunization and screening measures, of the infection prevention and control program as required by applicable legislation/Act, regulation or policy; some measures are only recommendations (not requirements)
- Staff are required to be screened for Tuberculosis in accordance with the applicable legislation/Act
Physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the job and have an excellent rapport with elderly people, including those with Dementia and/or complex disorders (i.e., emotional, behavioural, cognitive, psychological, physical)
Must be able and available to work shift work, weekends, and statutory holidays (24 x7 x 365 operation) and meet requirements of availability as per the Collective Agreement
If not currently complete a recognized training program in Dementia Care (or equivalent recognized program), must finish within 1 year of hire as a condition of employment
Must maintain Dementia Care training requirements on an ongoing basis

Shift Information

Currently scheduled 22.5 hours days/evenings shifts, may be required to work days, evenings and nights including weekends.

The posted vacancy is currently scheduled on the Adam / Henley Unit. However, please be advised that Management reserves the right to reassign to other areas based on the needs of the home and residents.
