Full job description

Job Summary

The QA Assistant supports the Quality Assurance team in ensuring all frozen and fresh pie products meet company standards for food safety, quality, consistency, and regulatory compliance. This role works closely with production staff to monitor processes, perform inspections, maintain documentation, and uphold Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) throughout the facility.

Responsibilities

Production Quality Monitoring

Inspect pies during mixing, filling, baking, cooling, and freezing stages to ensure adherence to specifications.
Verify product attributes such as weight, appearance, crust quality, filling distribution, and packaging integrity.
Conduct routine temperature checks on ingredients, ovens, coolers, and freezers.

Food Safety & Compliance

Support HACCP, GMP, and SQF program requirements through daily monitoring and documentation.
Assist with allergen control procedures, including segregation, cleaning verification, and label accuracy.
Perform metal detector checks and ensure proper functioning of foreign‑material prevention systems.
Participate in internal audits and help implement corrective actions.

Testing & Documentation

Collect samples for microbiological testing, sensory evaluation, and shelf‑life studies.
Complete QA forms, CCP records, deviation reports, and daily inspection logs.
Verify lot codes, batch numbers, and traceability documentation for recall readiness.
Report non‑conformances and assist in root‑cause investigations.

Sanitation & Hygiene Oversight

Monitor employee hygiene practices, including handwashing, glove use, and PPE compliance.
Verify sanitation effectiveness on equipment and production surfaces.
Support environmental monitoring programs (swabbing, ATP testing, etc.)

Team Collaboration

Work closely with production supervisors to resolve quality issues on the line.
Provide basic training to staff on quality procedures and labeling requirements.
Assist with new product trials, collecting data and documenting results.

Qualifications

Experience in food manufacturing, bakery production, or QA roles preferred.
Knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, and food safety regulations (CFIA, SQF) considered an asset.
Strong attention to detail and ability to identify quality issues quickly.
Comfortable working in cold environments (freezers, coolers).
Ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive tasks.
Good communication skills and ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 25–40 lbs as needed.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
Ability to work in both warm bakery areas and cold storage/freezer environments.
