The Fitness Coordinator – Group Fitness is responsible for the development, delivery, and growth of group fitness programming. The role focuses on building strong member communities through high-quality class experiences, with an emphasis on participation, retention, and engagement (e.g., classes community retention), while contributing to membership growth and overall experience.
The incumbent leads instructors and volunteers, ensures consistent program quality, and aligns group fitness offerings with member pathways and organizational goals
Program Development & Delivery
- Plan, develop, and oversee group fitness programming to meet member needs
- Design schedules that optimize participation, accessibility, and program balance
- Ensure consistent, high-quality class delivery across all offerings
Integrate group fitness into broader member engagement pathways

Youth & Older Adult Engagement
- Lead the development of programs that support older adult health and wellness
- Expand participation through targeted, inclusive programming
- Support retention through community-building and program progression
- Support youth participation through inclusive class offerings
Staff & Volunteer Development
- Recruit, train, schedule, and support group fitness instructors and volunteers
- Lead instructor development, including certification pathways where applicable
Provide ongoing coaching, evaluation, and feedback

Member Experience & Engagement
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging class environment
- Monitor participation trends and member satisfaction
Support member onboarding through group fitness participation

Programs & Revenue
- Grow group fitness participation and program-based revenue
- Support development of specialty and small group programs
Track participation metrics and adjust programming based on data

Operations
- Manage class schedules, coverage, and instructor coordination
- Ensure safe, organized, and effective program delivery
- Maintain adherence to YMCA standards, policies, and risk management practices
- Collaborate with the Fitness Coordinator – Individual Conditioning to support aligned member pathways and a consistent member experience.
Community Engagement
- Lead community-based initiatives, events, and partnerships related to group fitness
- Promote programs to increase awareness and participation
- Other Duties as assigned
- Current Standard First Aid/CPR(C); The YMCA of Niagara will only accept a current certification that has WSIB approval
- Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., Kinesiology, Fitness, Recreation)
- Group Fitness certifications or relevant training is an asset
- Experience in group fitness instruction or program coordination
- Experience supporting or leading staff and/or volunteers
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build inclusive, engaging group environments
- Experience growing participation and program engagement
- Upon hiring, a clear and satisfactory criminal reference check inclusive of the vulnerable sector search (PVSC) issued for the YMCA of Niagara.
