Blue HDD Utilities & Excavating Inc. is seeking an experienced Directional Driller to join our team. This is a unionized position governed by the applicable Collective Agreement.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and productive completion of horizontal directional drilling operations, including bore planning, equipment operation, and job site safety compliance. This role requires regular travel, occasional overnight stays, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, field-based environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate directional drilling equipment using appropriate drill heads, tooling, and back reamers to install underground cable, conduit, and ducting systems.
- Work collaboratively with crew members to complete directional drilling installations safely and efficiently.
- Safely transport tools, materials, and equipment to and from job sites.
- Complete daily pre-trip, en-route, post-trip, and walk-around inspections.
- Perform daily inspections and maintenance checks on drilling equipment.
- Prepare and manage drilling fluid mixtures based on site conditions and project requirements.
- Identify and troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate repairs with service technicians when required.
- Provide technical support and guidance to clients, supervisors, and crew members.
- Complete all required documentation, including:
- Driver logbooks
- Vehicle inspection reports
- Equipment maintenance records
- Incident and accident reports
- Ensure compliance with all site-specific rules, regulations, permits, and safety requirements.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining communication with supervisors and project teams.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) experience.
- Minimum 7 years of experience operating a similar support vehicle and equipment combination.
- Experience working safely around existing underground utilities.
- Strong verbal communication and teamwork skills.
- Working knowledge of Ontario CVOR regulations and Book 7 Traffic Control requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate drilling and support equipment independently.
- Valid AZ Driver's Licence with a clean driver's abstract.
- Clean driving record with no serious Highway Traffic Act offences within the past three years.
- Ability to work safely in demanding field conditions and adapt to changing job site requirements.
- Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Willingness to complete all company, client, union, and legislatively required training.
Preferred Certifications (Assets)
- Electrical Awareness Training Certification.
- Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Book 7 Traffic Control Certification.
- Ground Disturbance Certification.
- Confined Space Awareness Training.
- Additional utility construction, heavy equipment, or safety-related certifications.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position.
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Frequent travel to various job sites throughout Ontario and surrounding areas as required.
- Overnight travel and hotel accommodations may be required depending on project location and operational needs.
- Overtime, weekend work, and extended work hours may be required based on project schedules.
- Physically demanding work involving lifting, walking, climbing, and working around heavy equipment.
