Job Summary

Pfenning’s Organic Vegetables Inc. is looking for a Key Account & Business Development Associate to join our Sales Team on a fixed-term basis for maternity leave coverage.

This is a hands-on sales role with a mix of account management, customer relationships, and new business development. You’ll work with existing customers to grow their business, reach out to prospective customers, uncover new opportunities, and help bring new accounts on board.

You’ll have the opportunity to work directly with customers across the food industry, from restaurants and food service to grocery and distribution, while helping grow a well-established local food business.

We’re looking for someone who is energetic, confident, organized, and comfortable making connections. If you enjoy picking up the phone, starting conversations, understanding what customers need, and turning opportunities into sales, you’ll fit right in.

Experience in produce, food service, grocery, agriculture, or sales is an asset, but we’re equally interested in someone with the drive, communication skills, and curiosity to learn.

Ideally, the successful candidate will join us before the maternity leave begins so there is time for training and a smooth transition into the role.

Duties

Enter and coordinate daily order entry and order coordination for existing customers.
Support Key Account Managers with customer communication, account management, and sales activities.
Build and maintain strong relationships with existing customers to support retention and increase sales.
Identify opportunities to grow sales within existing accounts by understanding customer needs and identifying additional products, services, or opportunities.
Develop relationships with prospective customers and conduct targeted outreach to generate new business.
Support the onboarding of new customers, including coordinating first orders, establishing processes, and providing ongoing customer support.
Research and identify new business opportunities within restaurants, food service, grocery, distributors, institutions, and other potential customer segments.
Conduct customer outreach through phone, email, in-person meetings, networking, and other appropriate channels.
Assist in developing sales strategies and targeted programs to attract new customers and increase sales.
Monitor customer activity and sales data to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
Use sales and accounting software to maintain accurate customer information, track sales activity, and support reporting.
Represent Pfenning’s at industry events, trade shows, networking opportunities, and customer meetings to build relationships and generate business opportunities.
Work closely with the Sales and Marketing Manager and Key Account Managers to achieve sales and growth objectives.
Collaborate with the Marketing Team on customer outreach, promotional initiatives, and content that supports sales growth.
Provide exceptional customer service and respond promptly to customer questions, concerns, and opportunities.
Other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

Skills

Previous experience in sales, account management, business development, customer service, or a related field.
Experience in produce, food service, grocery, agriculture, or a related industry is an asset.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with customers.
Comfortable initiating conversations with prospective customers and conducting sales outreach.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to identify opportunities, solve problems, and follow through independently.
Comfortable working with sales data and computer systems.
Experience with sales, accounting, or customer relationship management software is an asset.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while managing priorities independently.
A genuine interest in food, farming, and growing a successful business.

Working conditions

While this is a fixed-term contract position, there may be an opportunity to discuss a permanent position at the conclusion of the contract. Any future opportunity would be contingent on individual performance, business needs, and company growth.
Ideally, the successful candidate will begin prior to October 1 to complete training and transition into the role.
Hours are nominally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility required based on customer and business needs. There will be some days during the busy season where evening work is required.
Work schedules may fluctuate during seasonal periods and periods of increased business activity.
