Chippewas of the Thames First Nation Board of Education is currently accepting applications for a Learning Support Worker

Application deadline: July 31, 2026, by 4:00 PM

Background:

We are the Anishinaabeg of Deshkan Ziibiing, also known as Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. We call ourselves Anishinabek, which means the original people. We are known as the Ojibway, a Nation of the Algonquin language family who originally migrated to the Great Lakes area from the north-eastern region of North America. We have a modern air-conditioned school with a full-sized double-gym, outdoor track, a full cafeteria, and a new library. Class sizes are small and well stocked with current resources, a SmartBoard and ample access to current technology.

Cultural Awareness Statement:

Demonstrated knowledge of Anishinaabe history, culture, traditions, and the social structure of Chippewas of the Thames First Nation is an asset. Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of culturally responsive educational practices and the ability to build respectful relationships with students, families, staff, and community members. An appreciation of the Anishinaabemowin language and a willingness to learn and promote the language are expected.

Quailifications:

Diploma in Social Service Work (SSW), Child and Youth Worker (CYW), Educational Assistant, Developmental Services Worker (DSW), or a Bachelor's degree in a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Standard First Aid/CPR Level C
De-escalation and crisis intervention training 
Physical ability to perform job duties
Specialized training or experience working with children who have special needs or exceptionalities is an asset
Knowledge of the First Nations educational systems, learning techniques, socialization processes, attitudes, values, aspirations and expectations
Must have the ability to work as part of a team to establish and maintain effective communication with teaching staff and student.

Language and Cutural responsibilities

Participate in Anishinaabemowin language learning opportunities provided by the Board.
Support and promote the use of Anishinaabemowin throughout the school.
Collaborate with Language Educators.
Assist in the development and implementation of culturally relevant learning opportunities.
Participate in community events that support student learning and school-community relationships.

Under the Supervision of the Principal, Learning Support Teacher/ Vice Principal the Learning Support Worker is responsible for, but not limited to:

Assisting teachers in the classroom or school environment by helping students individually or in small groups to consolidate skills in any subject area or grade
Guiding and assisting students in the development of self-help skills such as eating, dressing and toileting and demonstrating flexibility by being able to work in all classrooms when needed
Preparing and maintaining the indoor and outdoor play areas for children’s use, including checking toys and equipment to ensure safe functioning, and performing various housekeeping and sanitizing duties as required
Documenting student work performance and behaviours to share with teachers and LST
Supervising and assisting with students' behaviour such as deescalating behaviour or following through with behaviour management and modification plans Assisting with supervision of an overall class when the teacher is working with a small group
Model appropriate pro-social skills, participation, behaviours and problem-solving skills
Assist staff in the management of students’ behaviours by applying proactive strategies
Other duties as required

Extra-curricular Activities

Staff are expected to participate in extracurricular activities and community events throughout the school year, including student athletics, clubs, family engagement evenings, Pow Wow, Community Feast, and other Board-supported events.

Hours of work:

Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM (7.5-hour days)
