Reporting to the Arts Programmer, Pottery Technicians assists in the operations of two pottery studios in the Richmond Cultural Centre and Annex. The role is best suited to an individual with the necessary technical expertise for the required duties. Independent judgement and action are exercised in the work within the framework of established guidelines. Knowledge of pottery styles, techniques and trends is an asset. Ability to communicate effectively with members of the community from various age groups as well as different cultures and abilities is also an asset.

Loads and unloads kilns and oversee firing

Mixes and tests a variety of glazes for studio use according to proper procedures

Oversee operations of the pottery studio during drop-in sessions

Creating health and safety guidelines and orienting new users to the pottery studio

Ensuring hazardous materials are stored and labeled safely and have updated MSDS
-
Assist in planning in implementation of student/instructor exhibitions

Maintain positive communication with instructors and community groups

Instruct/facilitate pottery classes and workshops

Collaborate with the Arts Programmer to create a class schedule that fits the needs of the community and works with the limitations of the space.

Oversee the team of instructors and Studio technicians in all aspects of the use of the space. Including but not limited to: communal studio maintenance, classroom procedures and protocols.

Maintaining the studio as a safe and effective learning environment by keeping up to date on workplace best practices.

Sound knowledge of kiln operation procedures and related safety precautions.

Sound knowledge of procedures for mixing glazes.

Working knowledge of the operation and organization of a pottery studio.

Ability to load and unload pottery materials from kilns.
-
Ability to make glazes according to standard procedures.

Ability to oversee studio operations during drop-in sessions.

Working knowledge of ordering and receiving supplies.

Ability to maintain the studio in a clean, orderly and safe manner.

Ability to effectively communicate and provide instruction to community members.

Ability to lift 50lbs, putting away the clay and materials order.
- Understanding of and ability to calculate glaze UMF to ensure studio glazes are safe for public use.

Completion of a Diploma or 2-year program in arts education, visual arts, or related field.

A total period of up to and including 1 year of experience assisting in the operation and maintenance of a Pottery Studio.

An equivalent level of training and experience may be considered.

Duties are mainly performed in the Pottery Studios with administration work taking place in office environment.

May encounter upset or unpleasant customers.
