Registered Veterinary Technician – Anesthesia (Surgery & Neurology)
Our hospital continues to grow and is looking for an experienced technician with a drive to learn.
We guarantee you won’t be bored here, and we are a perfect place for a VTS. We support our techs that want to pursue a VTS with additional group training sessions, journal club and mentorship. New graduates are welcome to apply but may be placed in a different area of the hospital to start their training. What You’ll Do: Patient Care & Basic Skills:
- Perform TPRs and intravenous catheter placements
- Take thorough patient histories for consults
- Communicate effectively and delegate tasks
- Prepare patients and assist with surgical procedures, including sterile pack handling and OR setup
- Clean and sanitize instruments and surgical areas post-procedure
Anesthesia & Monitoring:
- Administer and monitor anesthesia for a variety of patients across ASA classifications (I-V)
- Utilize ECG, doppler, oscillometer, pulse oximetry, capnography monitoring to ensure patient safety
- Perform endotracheal intubation and manage airway during anesthesia
- Administer IV fluids and emergency drugs as needed
- Assist with anesthesia for MRI, CT, diagnostic, elective, and emergent procedures
- Apply advanced anesthesia techniques, including TIVA, epidurals, nerve blocks, ventilator use, invasive BP monitoring.
Surgeries & Procedures You Will Support:
Surgery Department:Anesthesia Technicians in Surgery will support a wide range of soft tissue and orthopedic surgical procedures, including but not limited to:
- Orthopedic procedures: TPLO, THR, MPL, fracture repair (internal/external fixation), arthroscopy
- Soft tissue procedures: abdominal exploratory, TECA-BO, maxillectomy/mandibulectomies
- Oncologic surgeries: mass removals, limb amputations, thoracic tumor resections
- Thoracic procedures: thoracotomy, sternotomy, diaphragmatic hernia repair
- Emergency surgeries: GDV, hemoabdomen, penetrating trauma, wound reconstruction, Cesarean Section
Neurology Department:Neurology Anesthesia Technicians will work directly with the neurology team on advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures, including:
- Spinal surgeries: hemilaminectomy, ventral slot, spinal stabilization
- Brain surgeries: craniotomy, intracranial mass removal, ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement
- Diagnostic procedures: MRI, CT, CSF taps.

Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program
- Successful completion of the VTNE
- Eligible for registration with the BCVTA
- Experience in an emergency or referral setting is an asset (but not required, training provided)
- Strong communication, critical thinking, and teamwork skills
- Detail-oriented, reliable, and adaptable
- Ability to work independently while supporting a fast-paced, specialty hospital environment
Languages: English
Education: College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 1 year to 2 years or equivalent experience
Experience:

Tasks:
- Handle, restrain and care for animals undergoing treatment and surgery
- Assist veterinarian before, during and after surgery
- Prepare and administer medications and vaccines under direction of veterinarian
- Administer treatments as prescribed by veterinarian
- Counsel clients on animal health care
- Produce diagnostic radiographs, collect samples and perform other laboratory tests
- Provide nursing care and rehabilitation therapy for animals
- Provide wound and bandage care
