Full job description

IMPORTANT: This role requires the successful candidate to live in the nation community of John D'or Prairie from Monday - Friday each week (housing will be provided). Travel between the three communities of LRRCN will be required.

Overview
Mamawi Awasis Society (“MAS”) is responsible for delivery of delegated child and family services to the Little Red River Cree Nation communities.

The Mamawi Awasis Society Board of Directors is seeking an experienced and passionate leader who can effectively manage a team of professionals and staff while working closely with the Board. We are seeking an individual dedicated to protecting children and families, respecting and honouring cultural practices and holistic approaches, and advancing prevention, healing, and family and community well-being. The Executive Director Position:

The Executive Director (“ED”) has the primary responsibility for the management of the internal and external affairs of MAS. The ED is accountable to ensure the development, provision, and monitoring of quality programs and services for children and families in the Little Red River Cree Nation (“LRRCN”) communities of Fox Lake, John D’Or Prairie, and Garden River.

The ED must have an understanding of Bill C-92 and a strong knowledge of other applicable legislation and have the ability to negotiate and work with federal and provincial governments and other funding agencies on children’s issues.

The ED is accountable to the Board and to the Province of Alberta as the LRRCN delegated authority for the provision of child and family services for LRRCN communities.

The ED is responsible for establishing and maintaining appropriate standards for all budgets and for financial management and regulatory reporting.

This is a full-time position based in LRRCN, requiring travel and supervision outside of the community and outside of regular work hours. The position is overtime exempt.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

1. Education: BSW, MSW, or closely related field plus experience. Registration with a relevant professional college (i.e. Alberta College of Social Work).

2. Experience: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in delivering front line child & family services, preferably with First Nations children, families and communities. A minimum of 3 years management and supervisory experience. Previous experience managing a Delegated First Nations Agency is an asset. Accounting experience is an asset.

3. Specific Skills:

Working knowledge of First Nation community and family structure, customs and traditions.
Commitment and experience in building and delivering holistic, culture-based prevention supports that include land-based practices and is child-centered and family-focused.
Considerable knowledge of federal and provincial legislation, policies and programs.
Experience working with and knowledge of the Board.
Fiscal management, human resources and organizational development experience and skills.
Ability to facilitate and maintain a multi-disciplinary supportive team environment.
Excellent judgment, diplomacy, and inter-personal skills.
Ability to work with integrity and confidentiality.
Ability to work collaboratively with other LRRCN departments.
Ability to anticipate and act within a changing environment.
Ability to manage competing interests to mitigate conflict (i.e. staff, Board, etc.).
Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language is a strong asset.

4. Additional Requirements

Current and valid driver’s license.
Own vehicle or access to vehicle with $2M auto liability insurance.
Satisfactory driver’s abstract.
