Full job description

Job Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Personal Attendant to provide exceptional care and support to a single female client in her personal residence with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Client is bed-bound with limited mobility of all limbs, has a feeding tube, and is ventilator dependent with a tracheostomy. Client needs assistance with all activities of daily living, but is able to communicate verbally and directs her own care. Client lives with family members, and they will provide all necessary training for successful candidates to complete duties listed below. Family members will also be available 24/7 to answer any questions.

*This is a casual part-time position. Successful candidates will be available to fill shifts on short notice. The majority of shifts will be overnight from 11pm-7am, including weekends. Client requires an attendant to be present while she is sleeping in case she is in need of respiratory therapy overnight. Night shifts are paid at a flat rate of $142.5 per night, and this rate is non-negotiable due to government funding constraints.

**This is not a cash job. All candidates are required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN).

Duties

Assist clients with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility to promote independence and dignity
Provide care related to respiratory therapy, such as suctioning and tracheostomy maintenance
Provide care related to medication and nutrition administration through a feeding tube, basic health monitoring, and support with appointments
Perform light housekeeping tasks such as cleaning, and maintaining a safe environment
Must be able to complete brief changes, turning, and repositioning in bed without assistance, as well as operate a Hoyer lift independently (training provided in the home); client will be moved from bed to power wheelchair and from power wheelchair to bed daily
Support client mobility with physiotherapy and chest percussion
Offer companionship and emotional support to foster a positive and engaging atmosphere

Qualifications

Training as a PSW is preferred
Prior experience in assisted living, home care, nursing home settings, or hospice care is highly desirable, though not required
Knowledge of patient care practices and caregiving techniques for seniors or individuals with disabilities
Ability to perform heavy lifting safely when assisting with transfers or mobility needs
Strong communication skills, patience, and compassionate attitude toward clients’ needs
Ability to follow detailed instructions related to care plans
Flexibility to work various shifts including overnights or weekends as needed
Willingness to learn and develop new skills, adaptable, situational awareness and excellent problem solving

Access to kitchen appliances and facilities

CPR certification is preferred

Nursing students are welcome to apply

Home is pet friendly (two cats)

Unpaid 30 minute breaks are required every 5 hours worked consecutively
