Instructional Designer

Opportunity in Professional Regulation

The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) is the regulatory body for 18,600 clinicians working under the protected title of Registered Psychotherapist in this province. As the regulator, we are responsible for developing, establishing and maintaining requirements for registration and renewal; ensuring the ongoing competence of registrants; developing professional practice standards; and, holding registrants accountable for their conduct by investigating and addressing all complaints. The Instructional Designer supports the College by designing, developing, and coordinating practical, accessible educational resources for registered psychotherapists and for Council and committee members. Working collaboratively with staff and subject-matter experts, the Instructional Designer:

translates regulatory requirements, standards of practice and emerging practice issues into clear, engaging learning materials that support registrants’ ongoing professional development and compliance obligations
contributes to governance and regulatory education offerings for Council and committee members to support competence development and informed decision-making

This role is well suited to an individual with experience in adult education, instructional design, healthcare or regulatory content development and a strong interest in public interest regulation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Educational Content Development

Design, develop, and update educational resources to support registrants in meeting regulatory requirements, including: Webinars and recorded learning modules, Practice guidance documents and tools, reflective practice supports and self-assessment resources, educational upgrading related to registration, quality assurance and professional conduct requirements.
Translate regulatory requirements, standards and policy guidance into plain-language, practice-relevant educational content.
Design, develop, and update educational resources to support Council and committee members in developing required competencies, including: Presentations and recorded learning modules, interactive workshops, Board library resources.
Ensure learning materials are aligned with adult learning principles and accessible to practitioners across a range of practice settings and to Council and committee members across different processional experiences.

Instructional Design & Learning Experience

Apply instructional design methodologies to structure learning content that is clear, engaging and outcomes-focused.
Develop learning objectives, session outlines, scripts, presentation materials and accompanying resources.
Support evaluation of learning effectiveness through feedback, engagement metrics and continuous improvement.

Collaboration & Subject-Matter Coordination

Work closely with staff, Council and committee members and system partners to identify priority topics based on regulatory risk, practice trends and registrant needs.
Coordinate with subject-matter experts (internal and external) to support content accuracy, relevance and consistency with College standards.
Support the planning and delivery of live and recorded educational events, including scheduling, logistics and post-event follow-up.

Quality, Consistency & Accessibility

Ensure educational materials are consistent with College policies, standards of practice and regulatory language.
Apply accessibility and inclusion best practices to learning materials (e.g., plain language, captioning, accessible formats).
Maintain organized records of educational resources and contribute to continuous updating and lifecycle management.

Environmental Scanning & Continuous Improvement

Monitor developments in psychotherapy practice, ethics, healthcare regulation and professional education to inform content development.
Support the staff team in identifying emerging practice risks and educational gaps.
Contribute to evaluating and reporting on College-wide educational initiatives.

Requirements:

Post-secondary education in adult education, institutional design, education, health sciences, social sciences, communications or a related field.
5+ years experience developing educational or training content for adult learners, preferably in a healthcare, regulatory or professional practice environment.
Experience translating complex or technical information into clear, practical learning resources.
Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) and Adobe Acrobat required.

Skills:

Strong instructional design and curriculum development skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated ability to write for and present to professional audiences in clear and plain language.
Understanding of adult learning principles and reflective practice.
Strong organizational and project coordination skills.
Ability to work collaboratively across teams and with subject-matter experts.
High attention to accuracy, quality and consistency.
Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA).
Experience supporting continuing professional development (CPD) or quality assurance programs is an asset.
Familiarity with psychotherapy, mental health practice, or health professional regulation is an asset.
Experience working in a regulatory, professional college, or public interest environment is an asset.
Fluency in French considered an asset.

Technical & Digital Skills

Experience developing webinar content and working with learning platforms or content management systems.
Proficiency with common digital tools for content creation (e.g., presentation software, document design tools, basic multimedia platforms).
Comfort working with recorded and live virtual learning formats.
