Appointment Details

The base salary range for Contract Lectures hired August 16, 2026 through August 15, 2027 is $79,644.07 to $101,855.82 per annum. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Contract amounts are calculated based on the number of semester hours in the appointment.

AFF604/FIN800 Qualification Requirements

Educational Background & Experience: Master’s degree or PhD in Finance, Ethics, Business, or a closely related discipline, with relevant post-secondary teaching experience or industry expertise in financial ethics.

Instructional Delivery: Proven ability to design and deliver weekly 3-hour lectures utilizing engaging pedagogical methods, including case studies, facilitated class discussions, and guest speaker engagements.

Subject Matter Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge and capability to teach normative ethical theories (deontological/teleological) alongside key financial topics:

Agency theory and conflicts of interest in financial markets
Fiduciary duties and trustee responsibilities across pension, mutual fund, and wealth management sectors
Financial regulations, insider trading, bribery, and corporate governance structures
Contemporary themes such as Islamic finance, ESG/ethical investing, and diversity and inclusion in finance
Assessment & Evaluation: Strong track record in designing, administering, and grading rigorous course evaluations, including individual executive memos, term papers, group presentations, quizzes, midterms, and final exams.
Course Administration & LMS Proficiency: Demonstrated experience managing learning management systems (e.g., D2L Brightspace) for content delivery and grade distribution, alongside a commitment to providing student mentorship through regular office hours.

Required:

Academic Background: A Master’s degree (MSc, MBA, or MFin) or Ph.D. in Finance, Accounting, Business Ethics, or a related discipline.

Subject Matter Expertise: Deep understanding of ethical decision-making, financial regulation, corporate governance, and professional codes of conduct within Canadian and global financial markets.

Teaching Experience: Demonstrated ability or experience in teaching university-level finance or business ethics courses, with strong student evaluations.

Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills to facilitate high-level classroom debate and evaluate student writing/analytical assignments.

Preferred:

Professional Designations: CFA, CPA, CFP, or relevant financial compliance/ethics credentials.
Industry Experience: Direct experience working in financial services, investment management, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, or public policy.

Effective May 1, 2022, the University’s Vaccination Policy has been suspended. PT: part-time up to 2 sections
RW: reduced workload 3 to 4 sections
FS: full sessional 5 sections

In addition to the minimum TRSM qualification requirements, the School/Department requires applicants to maintain the following qualifications:

Required:

Academic Background: A Master’s degree (MSc, MBA, or MFin) or Ph.D. in Finance, Accounting, Business Ethics, or a related discipline.

Teaching target or similar course at Toronto Metropolitan University graduate program.
Teaching target or similar course at another university graduate programs.
Teaching target or similar course at Toronto Metropolitan University undergraduate program or another university undergraduate program.
Teaching target course at College.

Practice field experience:

Current (past 6 years) practice in related field 6-10 (depends on quality of experience, including relevance to course, level of responsibility, relevant professional accreditation, etc.)
Past (more than 6 years ago) practice in a related field.

Teaching Skills:

Demonstrated experience of ability to effectively teach in an online environment which includes demonstrated knowledge of best practices for the delivery and management of online courses, including using course management system tools to communicate with students and to foster and support a collaborative online learning community with and between students in the course.
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of personal computers that are relevant to this course, including document creation, file management, internet research, and communications.
TMU has discontinued its Faculty Course Survey and adopted a five-question Course Operation Survey (COS) that assesses the student experience in the course that is utilized by teaching faculty in the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association. The COS is not to be used to assess teaching effectiveness in the Contract Lecturer hiring process.

Currency:

Academic publications (refereed) in the past 6 years.
Academic publications more than 6 years ago or current (6 years or less)
Professional profile (including professional or academic presentations).
Other demonstrated professional currency (practitioner writing, courses taken)

The address or addresses to which the letter of appointment should be sent, and any periods when the candidates cannot be contacted.

Evidence of having demonstrated skills/ability to teach effectively in a University environment (please include recent student evaluations with your application).

Acceptable teaching assessments from any formal classroom visits by an assessor (provide most recent assessor’s teaching evaluations or equivalent combination demonstrating ability to teach effectively.)

Candidates will be evaluated using the following rating criteria and weightings:

Applicants must meet TRSM’s minimum qualification requirements before they are considered by the Contract Lecturers Appointment Committee.

EDUCATION (20+ points maximum)

PhD. or equivalent in finance 10-20 points

PhD. or equivalent candidate 8-15 points

MBA (Finance specialization) or Masters in Finance 6-12 points

Terminal degree in other (relevant) discipline 1-10 points

Additional certification (CFA; CA; CGA; CMA; CFP etc.) 0-3 points per certification

TEACHING EXPERIENCE (10 points maximum)

Experience teaching target or similar course at TMU/Ryerson 2-5 points

Teaching target or similar course at other university 2-4 points

Teaching other (relevant) course at TMU/Ryerson 1-3 points

Teaching target or similar at college 1 points

Recent teaching assessments / course operation surveys 0-5 points

EFFECTIVE INTERACTION (25 points maximum)

Effective interaction with colleagues/students 0-13 points

Timely (accurate) performance of obligations 0-12 points

1) Common Midterm Assessment: Depending on the release of the Associate Dean Academic’s master schedule, a common midterm assessment may be scheduled between Weeks 6 and 8 (most likely on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday). Instructors are required to be present in the exam room to address student questions. Further details will be provided once dates are finalized.

2) Exam Supervision: Pursuant to Article 17 of the CUPE Unit 1 Collective Agreement, candidates must be available to attend and supervise all midterm and final examinations as scheduled by the Dean’s Office and University Scheduling. Compliance with all Article 17 obligations is mandatory; failure to attend or unexcused tardiness for scheduled examinations will impact eligibility for future teaching appointments within TRSM at Toronto Metropolitan University.
