BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood provides after-hours veterinary care for pets in Collingwood and the surrounding communities when their regular veterinary hospital is closed or unavailable. We are independently owned by a group of local veterinarians with deep roots within the community, some of which are local practice owners who support the the model.
Urgent care occupies the important space between scheduled general practice and overnight emergency medicine. Our veterinarians assess, stabilize and treat patients requiring timely attention, including gastrointestinal illness, wounds, allergic reactions, urinary concerns, pain, respiratory problems and other acute medical or surgical conditions.
The work is varied, engaging and extremely satisfying. It offers an opportunity to make an immediate difference for patients and their families while supporting the broader veterinary community through collaborative after-hours care. This would be a wonderful opportunity for a DVM who thrives in urgent and emergency medicine but finds the overnight challenging.
TWO TYPES OF OPPORTUNITIES
We are currently interested in speaking with veterinarians seeking either:
- Flexible independent-contractor locum work, including occasional or regularly scheduled shifts $120/hr
or
- A permanent Medical Director position that includes full benefits and the opportunity to discuss partnership and ownership in the business
We are open to a conversation with the right individual regarding the structure of the Medical Director and ownership opportunity.
HOURS OF OPERATION
Monday to Friday: 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Weekends and holidays: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
We do not provide overnight hospitalization. Patients requiring overnight monitoring, intensive care or services beyond the scope of our practice can be stabilized and transferred to an appropriate overnight or specialty facility.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- $120 per hour with production bonus

OUR FACILITY
Our hospital is equipped to support efficient case management and high-quality patient care, with access to:
- In-house laboratory testing
- Digital radiography
- Ultrasound
- Endoscopy
- Soft-tissue surgery
- Experienced veterinary support staff
CLINICAL EXPECTATIONS
Candidates must be confident working independently and managing urgent medical and surgical cases without direct veterinary supervision.
Basic surgical proficiency, including the assessment and suturing of lacerations, is expected. Experience and confidence performing additional soft-tissue procedures, such as pyometra surgery and uncomplicated gastrointestinal foreign-body removal, are highly desirable.
Experience with point-of-care ultrasound, including AFAST and TFAST examinations, is considered an asset.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are looking for a veterinarian who:
- Possesses strong medical and clinical decision-making skills
- Is comfortable independently assessing, stabilizing and managing urgent cases
- Has the basic surgical skills required for urgent care practice
- Communicates clearly and compassionately with clients during stressful situations
- Provides a high standard of care while discussing appropriate options across a realistic spectrum of care
- Works collaboratively with veterinary technicians, assistants, referring veterinarians and transfer hospitals
- Is dependable, flexible and engaged
- Contributes to a respectful, supportive and positive workplace culture
Medical Director candidates should also be interested in clinical leadership, maintaining high medical standards, supporting the veterinary team and helping guide the continued growth of the urgent care service.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be fully licensed and legally qualified to practice veterinary medicine in Ontario without clinical restrictions.
This is not a mentorship position. Candidates must be prepared to practice independently, and we are unable to consider applicants requiring a restricted licence or supervised practice arrangement at this time.
