The Team
The Dispute Resolution Team of the Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) plays a crucial role in ensuring fair and impartial resolution of conflicts between landlords and tenants in British Columbia. As an Arbitrator, you will join a team of professional decision-makers who embrace new ideas and technologies within a culture of innovation. The Role
As an Arbitrator with the RTB, you play a key role in resolving disputes between landlords and tenants, helping to ensure fairness in B.C.’s rental housing system. You’ll independently conduct hearings, assess evidence, encourage settlements, and issue clear, well-reasoned written decisions. You will spend approximately 10 hours per week conducting hearings, primarily via teleconference, with occasional use of video or in-person formats. Most of your time will be dedicated to analyzing evidence and writing decisions. This work requires neutrality, excellent written communication skills, sound judgement, and the ability to manage complex cases in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
Degree in a related discipline, such as law, criminology, public administration or social sciences.
An equivalent combination of relevant experience in statutory decision making and writing, education and training, which includes formal post-secondary level course work in a related field, may be considered.
Three (3) years’ experience in each of the following:
Interpreting and applying legislation, regulations and common law to complex scenarios.
Making complex defensible decisions using law and/or policy.
Providing and communicating complex legal analysis and reasoning in writing.
Effectively communicating with others in high conflict situations using self-control, tact, discretion, and sound judgement.
Adjudication experience in a court, tribunal, or board setting and/or party representative before courts, tribunals, or boards.
Preference may be given to applicants with:
Experience as a Decision maker (e.g. Arbitrator, Adjudicator or equivalent) at a B.C Board, Tribunal, or equivalent.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home up to five (5) days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
