Under general direction, the Custodian/Housekeeper provides custodial services for University facilities, providing regular cleaning, custodial maintenance and sanitation of common areas of residences, rooms and buildings, cafeteria and gymnasium including the interior building surfaces, fixtures, furnishings and fittings contained within these facilities. The Custodian/Housekeeper provides heavier cleaning and sanitation of resident dorms when not occupied or on request (e.g. floors, walls, fabrics). The Custodian/Housekeeper maintains a high standard of health and safety by regularly cleaning facilities on the Royal Roads Campus. The Custodian/Housekeeper maintains a high quality of upkeep and detailing of residence accommodation, lounges, hallways, entranceways and University houses and operates with minimal supervision from the Supervisor, Custodial and Housekeeping Services.
The incumbent is responsible for the physical appearance and cleanliness of assigned areas, ensuring they are maintained in accordance with applicable department, statutory codes and regulations, and for promoting the professional image presented by the University. At times, may be required to meet the operational needs of the Operations and Resilience department including working in extreme weather conditions or assisting with other teams.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
1. Cleans floors, including heavy-duty cleaning (scrub, strip, refinish and spot, bonnet or extract carpets) and routine light cleaning (dusts and vacuums).
2. Inspects and cleans all surfaces, vacuums and changes linens to ensure the rooms or houses are professionally cleaned to meet the needs of the visiting faculty, guests and professionals who will occupy them.
3. Cleans and sanitizes in residence and buildings washroom fixtures and drinking fountains, replenishing consumable product supplies on a regular basis and as required.
4. Monitors the status of the incoming and departing guests, in order to strip, clean and make up the rooms in accordance with the standards set by the Custodial/Housekeeping department.
5. Transports soiled and clean linens to and from the external laundry service and from buildings and houses as required.
6. Cleans interior of windows, glass partitions and all surfaces (walls, doors, shelves, desks, chairs, and building accessories) as required.
7. Cleans all chalkboards, white-boards and rails daily, as per unit policy.
8. Empties and cleans recycle and waste receptacles.
9. Maintains building entrances including cleaning of ash/trash receptacles near front entrances. Handles any seasonal issues i.e. fireplaces as required.
10. Replaces interior and exterior incandescent bulbs that can be reasonably reached (to a maximum of six (6) feet).
11. Performs custodial cyclical maintenance and strives to meet the special requests of long-term or special needs visitors and prepares the rooms according to their wishes.
12. Ensures the Custodial/Housekeeping Storage Room is adequately supplied and cleaned and that custodial/housekeeping equipment is maintained, as per unit procedure. Maintains an inventory of all equipment, supplies and linens, their quality, and distribution and makes recommendations on replacements to the Supervisor, Custodial/Housekeeping Services.
13. Inspects rooms as part of regular routine, reporting damage or excessive wear to buildings or houses to the Supervisor, Custodial and Housekeeping Services, Building Maintenance and/or Campus Security as appropriate and reports any incidents involving guest, student or staff to security.
14. Maintains security in executive houses, private rooms and buildings on campus and ensures windows and doors are locked at the end of work shift.
15. Works as an integral part of the University team and performs special projects and other duties of a similar scope and complexity related to custodial/Housekeeping services or otherwise as assigned.
16. At times, may be required to meet the operational needs of the Operations and Resilience department including working in extreme weather conditions or assisting with other teams.
