Full job description

We are recruiting for the I’Y, I, EN (“Person with a Kind Mind”) position, within our Culturally Aligned Integrated Support (CAIS) team. This is a temporary position.

The I’Y, I, EN (“Person with a Kind Mind”) plays an important role in ACEH’s work to prevent and reduce homelessness among First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. As part of the CAIS team, this position provides holistic, culturally grounded support in areas including food security, health, culture, family, and housing. Serving more than 100 Indigenous Family Members, this role also helps shape a wraparound model of care for communities across B.C.

Who we are: We are a non-profit, registered charity and culturally supportive housing provider dedicated to supporting First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Our work is Indigenous led and governed, and centers around the voices of our Indigenous Street Community whom we refer to as our Family Members. Through building partnerships locally and across the Island, we identify and address systemic and structural barriers, share information, resources, and lessons learned, and provide Indigenized harm reduction, cultural support services, and housing.

Our Vision: Our way is to care for all our people, from the youngest to the oldest. We are all one. Some of our people living away from home are suffering, isolated and homeless. We stand together to end homelessness.

Application Submission: You are required to submit a resume and cover letter that highlights First Nations, Inuit, and Metis ancestry, community/organization involvements, education, certification, demonstrated contract experience, and how your knowledge, skills, and abilities will support and contribute to the ACEH and our community through a cultural lens.

Job Details:

Position Type: Temporary Full-time or Part Time

Locations: ACEH Office, 1803 Douglas St, Victoria, BC

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Start Date: As soon as possible, contingent on receiving a Clearance Letter through the Criminal Record Check Review Program.

Travel Required: Yes.

Compensation and Benefits:

$31.50/hour
Employer-matched RRSP (up to 5%)

3 weeks (15 days) paid vacation annually (6% accrual, pro-rated for part-time)

5 paid sick days per year

Additional sick leave accrued at 1 day per month

3 unpaid personal days per year

Union Dues: This position is part of the bargaining unit and is governed by the Collective Agreement (CA) between ACEH and the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU). For work performed at unionized locations, a deduction of 1.85% for union dues will be applied to your pay for each pay period, in accordance with the Collective Agreement, and remitted to the Union.

Job Summary:

The I’Y, I, EN (“Person with a Kind Mind”) position is integral to the ACEH's goal of preventing and reducing First Nations, Inuit, and Métis homelessness. As part of the collaborative Culturally Aligned Integrated Support team, the I’Y, I, EN will support ACEH Family Members in all aspects of wellness, including food security, community health, culture, family, and housing. This role serves over 100+ Indigenous peoples and supports the development of a model for communities across B.C. to provide culturally informed, wrap-around services.

Key Responsibilities

Build caring and reciprocal relationships with Family Members supported by CAIS and across the organization.

Establish personal goals with Family Members and celebrate life achievements.

Provide cultural and family reunification support (e.g., home community visits for ceremonies and celebrations).

Support connections to healthy and cultural foods.

Lead ongoing case management to ensure integrated care for Family Members.

Connect Family Members with community resources aligning with their priorities and goals.

Assist with obtaining IDs, status card renewals, citizenship cards, etc.

Provide housing transition support, including home visits, moving assistance, community familiarization, and account setup.

Connect Family Members with appropriate cultural supports.

Attend land-based healing events and support delivery under the direction of the Land-Based Healing Manager.

Support weekly life skills, cultural, recreational, and social programming for Family Members.

Aid in community building initiatives, including lunches and appreciation events.

Assist Cultural Mentors and facilitators with drop-in and after-hours programs.

Coordinate efforts to involve Family Members in community events.

Participate in all CAIS team meetings.

Supportive with conflict resolution between Family Members by using de-escalation and non-crisis intervention strategies.

Actively use and update the CAMS Case Management Software for care and program evaluation.

Support data gathering and produce recommendations for ongoing program development and improvement.

Qualifications and Education, and Experience:

Experience or personal insights into working cooperatively and non-judgmentally with people with disabilities, lived experiences, and addictions.

Experience working with Indigenous peoples and marginalized populations.

Experience with non-profit organizations, family support, social services, and/or chronic homelessness is an asset.

Experience in coordinating events and community engagement activities.

Current First Aid and CPR certifications are required.

Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable car is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Progressive understanding of persistent mental illness, addictions, and other challenges impacting overall health and well-being.

Ability to work holistically, professionally, and non-judgmentally with diverse personalities, needs, cultures, lived experiences, and abilities.

Ability to effectively respond and adjust to unexpected events, assess high-risk situations, problem-solve, provide crisis intervention, and manage conflict in a culturally supportive manner.

Ability to work independently and manage competing demands while adhering to deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Effective written and verbal communication skills to facilitate collaborative practice, culturally safe environments, and a respectful workplace.

Demonstrated understanding of intergenerational trauma from colonization, Residential Schools, the Sixties Scoop, and other oppressive systems, and the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
