Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, the Field Health & Safety Coordinator plays a key role in supporting supervisors, foremen, and workers in the field by providing guidance, advice, and administrative assistance on all matters related to health and safety. This is primarily a field based position requiring regular site presence and travel to project locations across Ontario to support operations and ensure a strong health and safety presence in the field. This position is responsible for monitoring, auditing, and reporting findings and corrective actions to leadership to support compliance and a safe work environment.
What you’ll do here:
- Support regional operations (Hamilton, Kitchener, GTA, Bracebridge, Durham, Kingston and Ottawa etc.) and collaborate with corporate safety leadership as required.
- Serve as a primary health and safety resource to management, supervisors, and workers across our Heavy Civil, Sewer and Watermain, and Fabrication sectors.
- Act as a liaison between field operations and management, conveying safety concerns and recommendations.
- Conduct regular workplace, project site, and equipment inspections.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through engagement, coaching, empowerment, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Facilitate employee health and safety orientation and site-specific orientation for workers, subcontractors, visitors, owners, and clients, as required.
- Monitor subcontractor safety compliance and documentation.
- Ensure corrective actions and preventative actions are documented, implemented and tracked to completion.
- Assist in Ministry of Labour visits and respond to orders or compliance requirements.
- Lead or assist in incident and near miss investigations.
- Prepare detailed reports outlining corrective and preventative action plans.
- Review incidents, inspections, and workplace data to identify trends, emerging risks, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Coordinate and facilitate internal safety training (WHMIS, Annual Orientation, Confined Space, etc.).
- Ensure all Records of Training (ROT) are collected, tracked, and maintained.
- Track certification expiries and ensure compliance requirements are maintained.
- Maintain safety boards and ensure site postings meet legislative requirements.
- Assist in maintaining COR® and other audit/accreditation programs.
- Support the review, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies, procedures, safe work practices, and pre-job hazard assessments.
- Support emergency response planning and site preparedness.
- Coordinate project documentation through SiteDocs.
- Serve as worker representative on the JHSC; support agenda preparation, documentation, and follow-up actions.
- Maintain compliance with all JHSC legislative requirements.
What you bring to the team:
- Minimum of 3 years experience in heavy civil construction.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario OHSA and Regulation 213/91, specifically regarding highway and bridge construction risks.
- Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent experience).
- Construction JHSC Certification (Part 1 & 2) is preferred. NCSO or equivalent designations are considered an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, SiteDocs, and confident using technology in a work environment.
- Solution driven with the ability to prioritize tasks and achieve results in a fast paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid ability to command respect (particularly regarding OHS requirements)
- Positive attitude and collaborative approach
- Ability to form strong working relationships with team members and key stakeholders at all levels
- Must possess a valid G Driver’s License.
- Comfortable working in a predominantly field based role requiring regular site presence and travel to project locations across Ontario.
