JOB OVERVIEW
Under the direction of MHCC Leadership and the Chief Medical Officer, the MHCC Nurse provides autonomous, participant-centered care within a low-barrier, harm reduction-focused clinical environment. Guided by AHWC’s Vision, Mission, and Values, this role delivers comprehensive physical and mental health assessments using trauma- and healing-informed approaches.
The MHCC Nurse manages acute and chronic health concerns—including substance use, mental health challenges, and communicable diseases—by providing supportive counseling, overdose response, withdrawal management, and connections to housing and treatment resources. Working closely with an interdisciplinary team and external partners, the SCS Nurse develops collaborative care plans grounded in dignity and respect.
This supervised consumption site will initially operate as an interim, all-weather operation situated out of mobile units and located in the parking lot of the permanent site, which is currently under construction. Upon completion of the permanent site, operations will move indoors and will be expanded to include a micro-team for Primary Care and Rapid Access to Addictions Medicine service delivery.
As a Peer-led healthcare operation, the site delivers vital services including supervised consumption, drug testing, harm reduction supply distribution, safer use education, and community engagement. In this dynamic environment, the SCS Nurse plays a key role in clinical delivery while actively facilitating referrals to comprehensive, wrap-around supports for community members.
Crucially, the role requires a deep understanding of the histories, cultures, and lived experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, fostering a culturally safe environment and supporting the decolonization of healthcare systems.
EDUCATION
· RN/BN, BScPN, or RN(AP)
· Additional education or training related to addictions, substance use, mental health, or harm reduction practices — such as the Core Addiction Practice Certificate or equivalent — is considered an asset.
· Minimum four (4) years of recent related clinical nursing experience supporting the designated population within harm reduction, mental health and substance use, community health, primary care, or low-barrier care settings.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
· Possesses advanced clinical knowledge of substance use, addictions, concurrent disorders, and recovery-oriented care.
· Demonstrates proven experience supporting individuals navigating active substance use within low-barrier, harm reduction environments.
· Exhibits strong expertise in overdose response practices, Naloxone administration, safer substance use education, and hands-on crisis de-escalation.
· Commits to trauma-informed care and cultural humility, with a willingness to complete Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Safety Training (MICST) and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
· Practices with a high degree of clinical autonomy and strong decision-making skills within a fast-paced, evolving, and Peer-led team environment.
· Demonstrates strong case management and system navigation skills to effectively collaborate with community agencies and external healthcare providers.
· Utilizes excellent clinical documentation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) experience considered an asset.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Must maintain active registration and good standing with the applicable professional regulatory body and provide proof of registration upon request.
- Responsible for maintaining all professional licensing and practice requirements relevant to the role.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Community Care and Cultural Safety
· Provide culturally safe, trauma-informed, and person-centered nursing care that honors each participant’s self-defined healing journey.
· Welcome and offer therapeutic support to all community members—including Indigenous peoples, the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and individuals living with disabilities—in a judgment-free environment.
· Apply an understanding of health equity when supporting participants navigating poverty, houselessness, food insecurity, and substance use.
Clinical Practice and Operations
· Provide safe nursing practice, manage clinical operations, and lead crisis/overdose responses in alignment with AHWC policies and provincial standards.
· Partner closely with the SCS Program Manager, interdisciplinary team, and Peers to support daily operations, adapting actively as the site transitions from mobile units to the permanent facility.
· Participate in staff meetings, case discussions, and team huddles; proactively report operational, safety, or participant care concerns.
· Ensure strict compliance with the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) regarding the secure handling, documentation, and destruction of medical records.
· Is a ‘Helper’ – completes other duties as assigned, when required, as part of the SCS team, not exceeding stated skills and capabilities.
CRISIS INTERVENTION & ADDICTION SUPPORT
· Provide direct nursing care, clinical support, and withdrawal management to participants actively using substances across the continuum of stabilization and transition into recovery services.
· Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments evaluating physical health, mental health, behavioral presentation, and participant-identified goals.
· Monitor participant progress and symptoms, collaborating with physicians, allied health professionals, and the interdisciplinary team regarding follow-up care.
· Administer medications, treatments, and evidence-informed interventions for physical and mental health emergencies, including overdose response, anaphylaxis, and seizures.
· Provide participant education and supportive counseling regarding safer substance use, STBBIs, wound care, and overdose prevention.
· Facilitate intake, systems navigation, and referrals to connect participants with healthcare, housing, addiction treatment, and community-based services.
· Maintain accurate electronic and paper health records and program statistics in accordance with organizational, PHIA, and Shared Health standards.
· Collaborate with participants and community partners to address complex health needs, ethical concerns, and barriers to care.
· Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and the mentorship or clinical guidance of students and team members.
· Adhere to workplace health and safety regulations and professional nursing standards.

· Work within AHWC’s interdisciplinary model of care to support high quality, participant-centered service delivery across various environments, including outreach, mobile, and phone-based supports.
