Job Synopsis

The Abuse Response and Prevention (ARP) Program of Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba (MCCM) seeks to promote healthy family, church and community life. The goal of this program is to create awareness within family, community and congregational settings of the prevalence and seriousness of abuse, work towards its prevention, and equip people to respond in ways that foster healing.

This position will report to the Program Director and will work alongside the 0.5 ARP Coordinator. This is a part-time position (.50 FTE), located at the MCC Manitoba office at 140 Bannatyne Ave, Winnipeg.

Qualifications

Bachelor degree in a related field; Masters degree preferred (i.e., Social Work, Psychology Counselling, Social Science)
Experience working in the area of abuse response and prevention
Training in the dynamics and the impact of all forms of abuse,
Training in supporting victims of abuse and abusers, an asset
Training and/or experience in the area of trauma awareness and response
Proven interpersonal and communications skills – ability to relate, convey and receive messages accurately and in a positive interpersonal manner
Proven group facilitation and presentation skills; developing, planning, and delivery (public speaking) of workshops
Ability to work with a diversity of groups; church members and leaders, faith communities, and public groups at large
Proven organizational skills and attention to detail to deal with the demands of the role in a timely and accurate fashion
Proven Microsoft office computer knowledge; Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point Presentation
Cultural awareness and cultural competency as they pertain to the Mennonite constituency in general, conservative Mennonite groups, newcomers and Indigenous people
Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends
Favorable record check
Valid driver’s license.

Occasionally collaborate with contract staff to create and offer workshops/support program

Competencies:

Ability to relate to victims of abuse in an empathetic, non-judgmental and supportive manner
Group facilitation and public speaking skills
Knowledge about abuse in the context of churches (including abuse by a church leader) and Christian homes, dynamics of abusive relationships, forms and impacts of abuse
Understanding of power dynamics in relationships
Commitment to Biblical teachings about relationships; mutuality, equality, respect, and belief that all are created in the image of God
Understanding of what is necessary for healing for those who have been abused and change for those who behave abusively
Knowledge of faith-based, community based and government services which provide support to those experiencing abuse or behaving abusively
Commitment to the Anabaptist values of restorative justice, community and faith and able to represent these to interested individuals, congregations or agencies as requested

Major Responsibilities:

40% - Create awareness about abuse and trauma and equip constituency to respond to and prevent abuse in trauma sensitive and victim/survivor centered ways. This includes facilitating workshops and presentations when requested, organizing educational events, and promoting/maintaining MCC resources related to abuse response and prevention.

40% - Provide consultation and support services, grounded in survivor-centred and restorative justice principles, to individuals, families, organizations, and faith communities navigating interpersonal abuse, including sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and clergy sexual exploitation. This may also include helping organize and deliver therapeutic programming for survivors and accountability processes for those who have caused harm.

20% - Administration

Key Responsibilities

Create awareness about abuse; response and prevention and equip constituency to respond to and prevent abuse:
Facilitate Presentations and/or workshops to increase awareness about abuse dynamics and effective responses to abuse/trauma and its prevention (may include working collaboratively with contracted expert on occasion). Topics may include: trauma-informed ministry/organizations, healthy relationships, understanding and responding to intimate partner abuse, healthy professional boundaries, etc.
Foster collegial relationships with faith-based, community based and government organizations
Engage the constituency in raising awareness about abuse
Provide resources and information to church leaders and lay people, equipping them to respond effectively and prevent abuse

Provide consultation and support services, grounded in survivor-centered and restorative justice principles, to individuals, families, organizations, and faith communities navigating interpersonal abuse:

Stay current on best practices, resources, and community services related to abuse response and prevention; includes attending relevant trainings.
Maintain ethical boundaries and confidentiality when supporting individuals and groups affected by abuse.
Consult with and refer to field experts when a case falls beyond the program’s scope.
Provide non-judgmental, trauma-sensitive, survivor-centered support to individuals and communities facing abuse.
Offer evidence-based accountability resources to help communities respond appropriately to those who have caused harm.

Regularly connect to the MCC Abuse Prevention and Response network through conference calls, annual gatherings and joint initiatives
Foster collegial and cooperative partnerships with related community and ecumenical agencies.
Match resources with churches, families and community groups experiencing abuse
Administration
Participation in MCC Manitoba staff meetings and public engagements
Participate in MCC Abuse Response Network meetings/gatherings
Reporting and budgeting

General Tasks:

Ensure that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example
Attend and be actively involved in a local congregation
Model non-violent peacemaking in the workplace and community through respectful interactions with others
