We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Director of People & Culture who is drawn to purpose-driven work and inspired by the opportunity to support an organization that provides care and support to individuals in our community with disabilities and mental health challenges.

About the Opportunity

Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with organizational leadership, the Director of People & Culture will lead all aspects of the organization’s HR and workforce strategy.

The successful candidate will play a key role in:

Supporting and strengthening organizational culture
Leading recruitment, retention, and workforce planning initiatives
Supporting employee engagement and leadership development
Building long-term staffing and scheduling strategies
Guiding the organization through continued growth and operational evolution
Supporting positive labour relations within a newly unionized environment

This role requires a leader who understands the complexities and rewards of working in community services and supported living environments. The ideal candidate will genuinely value relationship-building, collaboration, and creating workplaces where people feel respected, supported, and empowered to do meaningful work.

Simaril is a newly unionized organization, and experience working within unionized environments will be essential for success in this role.

We are looking for a candidate who brings:

Experience navigating labour relations and collective agreements
Confidence supporting leaders in a unionized workplace
A collaborative and respectful approach to union-management relationships
The ability to support organizational change while maintaining a positive workplace culture

The successful candidate will help guide the organization through this evolving stage while ensuring employees continue to feel engaged, valued, and connected to Simaril’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Simaril’s People & Culture strategy in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and values
Partner with leadership to support organizational growth, workforce planning, and employee engagement
Oversee recruitment, onboarding, retention, succession planning, and performance management
Develop proactive recruitment and staffing strategies to support future organizational needs
Provide leadership and oversight related to workforce scheduling and staffing models
Support labour relations processes, collective agreement interpretation, and employee relations matters
Foster a culture grounded in compassion, dignity, inclusion, and respect
Ensure compliance with employment legislation, workplace health and safety standards, and HR best practices
Oversee compensation, benefits, leave management, investigations, and employee development initiatives
Analyze workforce trends and HR metrics to support organizational decision-making
Mentor and support HR team members while helping strengthen leadership capacity across the organization

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a strategic and emotionally intelligent HR leader who is passionate about supporting organizations that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Qualifications & Experience

Degree or diploma in Human Resources or related field
CPHR designation (or working toward designation) considered an asset
5–8+ years of progressive HR leadership experience
Experience working within unionized environments
Experience supporting organizations through new unionization or labour transitions considered a strong asset
Strong understanding of workforce scheduling, staffing models, and future recruitment planning
Experience within social services, healthcare, community services, or supported living environments strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of employment legislation and HR best practices
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
Ability to lead with empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
