The Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre of Winnipeg, Inc. is accepting applications from qualified persons for the Director of Programs position. Job Summary

Working under the Direction of the Chief Operating Officer the Director of Programs is responsible for providing a broad spectrum of services to meet the needs of the program participants via direct and indirect contact.

The Director of Programs is responsible for assisting in the ongoing development and the day-to-day management of the Abinotci Mino-Ayawin (AMA), Headstart (HS), Men’s Healthy Living Program (MHLP), Insight Mentor Program (IMP), and Indian Resolution Program (IRS) Programs. Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer this position is also responsible for the direct supervision of the AMA, HS, MHLP, IMP, and IRS Programs Support staff.

The Director of Programs in collaboration with the Senior Staff will implement strategies based on situational evaluations, needs assessments, and the formulation of remedial strategies to meet the constituent’s needs in an effective and respectful manner. Ability to work in an environment that supports participants who may be hostile, oppositional and volatile, while at all times maintaining composure and behave in a professional and dignified manner.

The Director of Programs will ensure that all activities are undertaken in a manner that is consistent with and complementary to the Vision Statement, the Principles and Values, and the policies and procedures of the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Working under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer -

Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the programs
Assist in the development of short and long term plans for programs, monitor progress, assure adherence and evaluate performance
Assist in design of performance objectives and implement and monitor programming to meet desired outcomes
Assist in the development of yearly outreach plan(s) according to program needs and capacity
Organize and establish meetings on regular basis with designated individuals/agencies to foster positive relationships
Supervise frontline staff by articulating expectations, displaying and modeling professional behavior, maintaining open lines of communication and being clear about roles and relationships
Address staff needs and identify relevant external training opportunities as required
Assist with the development of public relations and communications strategies to support program goals and increase community awareness
Provide leadership and guidance to staff on clinical issues, and recording confidential information (PHIA, FIPPA) etc.

Reporting

Maintain and supply a thorough and accurate record of all program activity including program statistics, narratives, special events, workshops
Prepares, organizes and facilitates staff team meetings
Provides information and documentation of all documents connected to the continued funding of the program, in conjunction with the Executive Director
Submits program reports as required
Ensure that all staff members work in a way that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the rights of participants being served
Consistently apply non-aversive strategies developed in response to challenging behaviours, and contribute to the review and development of any such strategies
Support staff in providing outreach, diversion, advocacy, and other needed services for participants in any environment including: the streets, shelters, prisons, hospitals, apartments, office, etc.
Provide staff with feedback and constructive criticism, when required
Maintains and supports respectful working relationships with colleagues, staff of AHWC, external service providers, community agencies, etc.
Follows through on team related goals i.e.: special events, facilitating networking meetings, etc.
Provides a program orientation to new program staff and student placements
Provide input into employee performance evaluation
Review with staff organizational changes to policies and practices.
Distribute/assign and oversee staff workload
Participate in staff recruitment and hiring for direct service vacant positions
Oversee new employee program orientation and ongoing training as required
Adhere to the definition of and reporting procedures legislated by the Province of Manitoba and Federal government; i.e. Child and Family Services, PHIA etc.
Facilitate, support and manage a crisis response when required and provide written documentation/reports as required.
Incorporate sound conflict resolution practices as required in the event of staff or staff/participant conflict
Ability to work with culturally diverse people and the familiarity with First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities and issues and challenges facing those choosing to move to Urban Centres is an asset.
Possess a detailed knowledge of applicable legislation and / or regulations governing the rights and obligations of individuals / families seeking support from the Centre.
Adheres to the definition of, and reporting procedures as legislated by the Province of Manitoba i.e. the Child and Family Services Act etc.
Working in a team environment with cultural groups, high needs, and marginalized populations;
Able to work independently and utilize sound judgment to perform all assigned duties with minimal supervision.
Able to exercise discretion, compassion, empathy and maintain confidentiality.
Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with constituents, co-workers, management team and community agencies.
A confident self starter able to meet challenges and to overcome obstacles.
Demonstrated capacity to function effectively in a working team environment.
Other duties as may be assigned

Qualifications

Masters level or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, or a BA in Social Sciences to meet the needs of vulnerable population or a combination of education and experience deemed acceptable by the AHWC
Minimum of 3 years related experience in program management or supervisory role, community outreach, mental health, addictions or housing programs
Strong Leadership Skills and supervisory experience
Experience, knowledge and understanding of systems related to community outreach, mental health, addictions, trauma, Harm Reduction and Disabilities (FAS/FASD)
Previous practical experience in working within an Aboriginal-based community services providing holistic support to individuals and families.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including skills in conflict resolution, team building
Ability to liaise effectively and positively with ancillary community groups, agencies and service providers
Organized to work efficiently in a busy work environment
Should be self -motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
Ability to promote and strategies to create a positive work environment
Must be able to work under pressure and with competing priorities.
Must be highly organized and able to work well with others
Able to work with a diverse population
Must have strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Creative, strategic and analytic thinker
Demonstrated experience in staff supervision and ability to plan and assess independent fieldwork undertaken by program staff
Possess a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Keyboarding
Possess a current Province of Manitoba Driver’s License and a suitable vehicle for work-related transportation
