Position Overview
The Sheet Metal Technician is responsible for fabricating, installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC ductwork, ventilation systems, and related sheet metal components in commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. This position supports Mac-Tower’s HVAC and ventilation division by ensuring quality, safety, and precision on every project. The ideal candidate is an experienced tradesperson with excellent attention to detail, a strong mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to safety, craftsmanship, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
Fabrication & Installation
· Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and technical schematics.
· Measure, mark, cut, and form sheet metal to required dimensions using hand tools and fabrication machinery.
· Assemble and install HVAC ductwork, diffusers, dampers, plenums, and fittings to specification.
· Install air handling units, fans, and ventilation systems in accordance with SMACNA and building code standards.
· Seal and secure ductwork to ensure air-tight, efficient airflow and long-term reliability.
· Work with mild steel, galvanized, aluminum, and stainless sheet metal.
Maintenance & Repair
· Inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain HVAC ducting and ventilation components.
· Repair damaged or corroded ductwork and fittings.
· Perform airflow adjustments, balancing, and system optimization as required.
· Assist service teams with preventive maintenance and emergency ventilation repairs.
Site Coordination & Communication
· Coordinate tasks with project managers, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians.
· Ensure installations are completed safely, efficiently, and within schedule.
· Provide feedback to supervisors regarding material needs, fabrication timelines, or design adjustments.
· Participate in project handovers and quality checks before commissioning.
Safety & Compliance
· Follow all Mac-Tower and COR-certified safety standards and procedures.
· Use PPE and fall protection equipment as required.
· Conduct job hazard assessments (JHAs) and report unsafe conditions immediately.
· Maintain a clean and organized work area both in the shop and on-site.
· Participate in toolbox talks, safety training, and compliance meetings.
Teamwork & Training
· Collaborate with other trades to achieve efficient workflow.
· Provide guidance and mentorship to apprentices and junior team members.
· Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a strong work ethic at all times.
· Represent Mac-Tower Inc. positively with clients, suppliers, and the public.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Certification
· Completion of Sheet Metal Worker apprenticeship or equivalent experience (Journeyperson preferred).
· Red Seal or trade certification in Sheet Metal Work is an asset.
· Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (required).
· WHMIS, Fall Protection, First Aid/CPR, and Lockout/Tagout certifications (or willingness to obtain).
· Familiarity with COR safety standards and procedures.
Experience
· 3–5 years of experience as a Sheet Metal Worker, Tin Basher, or Ventilation Technician.
· Proven ability to fabricate and install HVAC and ventilation systems accurately.
· Experience with commercial and industrial mechanical environments.
· Skilled in operating brakes, shears, rollers, and plasma cutting equipment.
Skills & Competencies
· Strong mechanical and spatial aptitude.
· Proficient in metal cutting, forming, and assembly.
· Excellent attention to detail and quality control.
· Physical stamina and ability to work at heights or in confined spaces.
· Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
· Knowledge of HVAC materials, fabrication standards, and building codes.
Compensation & Benefits
· Competitive wage range: CA$31.85/hr – CA$47.50/hr, based on experience and certification.

Working Conditions
· Field-based position with regular travel to client sites across Manitoba, Ontario, Nunavut, and remote communities.
· Standard hours: Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (overtime or weekend work as required).
· Work involves standing, climbing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and exposure to construction environments.
· Use of fabrication tools, power equipment, and safety gear required daily.
