Role Overview
The General Manager is responsible for setting the tone within the Community by modelling a healthy community culture in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Core Values. The General Manager assists in creating a vibrant, nurturing community where every day holds opportunities for joy, purpose, and meaningful connections, and where strong, caring relationships are at the heart of daily life. The Eden Alternative philosophy is embraced in all areas of service to ensure everyone associated with the Community has the opportunity to be their very best.
The General Manager serves as an ambassador of the company and is responsible for day-to-day administration of services; condo board management, financial operations; planning, development, implementation; evaluation and improvement of program services; supporting and empowering care partners; delivery of high-quality hospitality services; Resident and family relations. The General Manager plays an integral part in the leadership of the community and must work collaboratively with all service areas, Supervisors and Health Services partners.
Key Accountabilities
- Provides care and services in a manner that demonstrates the principles of appropriate choice, dignity, privacy, independence, and individuality in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values.
- Provides leadership to the team to ensure they understand and are committed to achieving person directed services.
- Assures the provision of high-quality services needed and/or desired by Residents.
- Attains and maintains ongoing compliance with appropriate regulatory standards. Ensures that Community is prepared for inspections by regulatory agencies through regular auditing, compliance, and updating of Wellness Strategies, etc.
- Responsible for the development of Community specific procedures.
- Participates in the budgeting process, maintain budget, report on variances and recommend solutions
- Attains and/or maintains the targeted occupancy level.
- Strives to attain excellence in Care Partner satisfaction through ongoing solicitation, surveys, and measurement of feedback. Implementation of Care Partner suggestions, interactive problem solving, and an annual evaluation.
- Makes improvements in the overall coordination of the Community’s services.
- Provides ongoing support, direction, supervision, and feedback regarding growth planning of all Care Partners, including contracted Care Partners and volunteers.
- Actively promotes Care Partner participation and involvement in the day-to-day operations and decision making.
- Promotes team building through participation and/or leadership at regular Care Partner meetings.
- Ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the building, equipment, furnishings and grounds.
- Responsible for ensuring that a safe environment is provided for Care Partners and Residents; makes efforts to reduce safety hazards, accidents and injuries.
- Responsible for providing, supporting and participating in resident directed services.
- Plan, develop, and implement expansion in program services.
- Develops and assures implementation of Community marketing program.
- Continually monitors, key measurable indicators of the daily operations.
- Assist with identifying and addressing unmet needs within the Community.
- Supervises/manages/directs the activities of the team and facilitates effective two-way communication with all parties.
- Apply the concern resolution process and respond to concerns/issues and conduct appropriate investigations as they relate to care/services within the Community.
- Coordinate and oversee Care Partner planning and scheduling as per budget/funding advice guidelines, including overtime and time off approval and vacation requests.
- Foster the development of Care Partners/volunteers/students and facilitate individual and team skills.
- Adhere to applicable contracts and licensing. (e.g. CCHSS)
- Responsible for the discipline and discharge of Community employee care partners and participates in investigations, attendance management and grievance processes in accordance with Well-Being Strategies. Liaise with Corporate Representative/HR/LR regarding human resource items as required.
- Attend and actively participate on various committees/meetings providing advice/ input.
- Organize and facilitate in-services/education at Care Partner meetings.
- Participates in ongoing educational programs to update knowledge on applicable topics.
- Leads and supports projects and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure the Emergency Management Plan is practiced and followed as required.
- Responsible for the recruitment, interviewing, retention, ECP recognition, supervision, promotion and regular growth check-ins of Care Partners.
- Participates in the collective bargaining process as required.
- Mentors the care team based on Well-Being Strategies.
- Address unscheduled Community needs as required based on Well-Being Strategies.
- Maintain appropriate levels of certification. (As required)
- On time completion of all annual mandatory education required by provincial regulations and the organization.
- Maintain confidentiality of the Community including but not limited to accountability of all care partners
- Participate in the after-hours ECP call in process as required.
- Manage and participate in after-hours On- call process as required
- Performs other services/tasks/duties related to employee care partner role as assigned
Required Education
- Grade 12 Diploma or recognized equivalent is required.
- Alberta's condominium legislation and regulations.
- Must be able to read, write and speak fluently in English.
- Degree/Diploma in a related field/ Certification in Management or leadership training
- Minimum 3 years of management experience in property management, nursing, recreation or hospitality.
- Supervision/leadership/facilitation/ Workplace Investigation/resolution experience.
- Experience and knowledge in human resources and/or labor relations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Power Point, Electronic Health Records, Electronic Payroll Systems & Publisher.
Required Skills
- Able to prioritize, re-adjust routines, and deal with repetitive activities.
- Years of condominium management experience.
- Ability to effectively deal with difficult and/or crisis situations that is free from abuse and /or neglect.
- Knowledge of services, assessments, care planning, and applicable regulations, guidelines, and policies.
- Commitment to person directed services- focusing on wellness not illness.
- Patience, active listening skills, verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrates an awareness/knowledge of the importance of health and safety; accident and injury prevention; and adheres to safe work practices and procedures.
- The ability to deal with stress. Examples of these stresses include, but are not limited to, service time rotation, weekend and holiday duty, unusual or impaired behavior by Residents, family reactions to having a loved one in the Community, death and dying, oversight of auditors, surveyors, and Ombudsmen or similar.
- Current familiarity with the Eden Alternative Philosophy and the Domains of Well-Being is preferred.
Additional Education and Skills
- Completion of applicable courses; Prevention of resident abuse, customer service, infection control, MIP, dementia, WHIMIS.
- Certification in management or leadership training
- Incident investigation certification
- HR and/or LR courses or training
