Position Summary:
As Lead Metal Fabricator you are responsible for the hands-on production and quality of custom metal components integrated into Peregrine Millwork's architectural woodwork projects, while providing day-to-day leadership to a small team of fabricators. This role combines strong technical welding and fabrication skill with the ability to read and execute shop drawings accurately, coordinate work across mixed-material assemblies (wood, metal, glass, stone, and specialty finishes), and mentor team members to maintain consistent quality and pace on the shop floor.
The Lead Metal Fabricator reports to the Production Manager.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and manage metal fabrication and welding staff
- Establish clear performance expectations and accountability measures
- Support hiring, onboarding, and training of metal fabrication personnel
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Manage fabrication team schedule, balancing workload and priorities
Fabrication
- Read and interpret shop drawings, ensuring final fitment is accurate and to-spec
- Set up and operate metal shop equipment
- Fabricate metal components manufactured by Peregrine, using appropriate tools and techniques
- Ensure completed metal constructions integrate with other materials (wood, stone, glass, etc.)
- Ensure quality meets standards
Shop Environment and Safety
- Ensure shop environment and tools are maintained to a high level of cleanliness and function
- Ensure shop working environment is safe, and that all metal staff use appropriate PPE
- Ensure metal shop is organized, and that materials are accurately accounted for
- Help plan opportunities for expansion in the metal department including equipment, people, and markets
Planning and Coordination
- Plan and coordinate metal schedule, including delivery times, outsourcing schedule and required hours
- Manage overtime as necessary
- Communicate proactively with the Production Manager and production teams on timelines, material needs, and project risks
- Assist with estimating fabrication times and best construction methods when input is required
- Track hours and status’ in Peregrines ERP system, Innergy
Efficiency
- Find the most efficient way to construct the final product
- Manage team hours to budgeted hours
- Manage material for best yield
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of hands-on metal fabrication experience, including structural and architectural/decorative elements
- Proficiency across multiple welding methods (MIG, TIG) and materials (steel, aluminum, brass, etc.), with the judgement to select the right method for the material and application
- Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring a small team in a shop or production environment
- Strong ability to read and interpret shop drawings, technical details, and specifications
- Comfortable working with mixed materials common in architectural millwork (wood, metal, stone, glass, laminates)
- Familiarity with outsourced metal finishes such as powder-coating, painting and plating
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, people-first leadership style
- Working knowledge of shop safety practices, including PPE requirements and safe equipment operation
- Familiarity with specialty fabrication processes, such as sheet bending, tube bending/rolling, laser or waterjet cutting, etc.
- Computer skills, including: Excel, Outlook, Scheduling or ERP Software
Beneficial Skills
- Experience with CNC guided metal processes (laser, waterjet, milling, etc.)
- Brake bending operation experience
- Tube bending/rolling experience
- Prior experience in an architectural metal setting
- Experience with CAD software for metal processing (Fusion, Solidworks, SolidCAM, etc.)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs regularly, and heavier loads with mechanical assistance
- Ability to stand, bend, and work in various shop positions for extended periods
- Comfortable working around welding equipment, heavy machinery, and shop environments with appropriate PPE
