Recreation Therapist - Day & Stay Program
Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Recreation Therapist to join our team for the Day & Stay Program. The Recreation Therapist organizes and plans the day-to-day operation of therapeutic recreational activities and programs for clients within the John Noble Centre Day and Stay Program. The Recreation Therapist assumes responsibility for the Program in the absence of the Program Manager. Reporting to the Manager of the Day & Stay Centre, they are responsible for the ongoing development and daily administration of client programs. Areas of responsibilities include: providing input or feedback with human resources, training and development of new staff, education, coordination and orientation of volunteers, assists with client assessment for admission to the program, reassessment, crisis management, maintaining and development of the environment for persons with dementia. They will identify risks and monitor safety, policy development, maintain the program supplies budget and work with other disciplines within the John Noble Home and other community support agencies. Will complete documentation required to maintain client records, develop care plans and update assessments related to the early onset/early-stage dementia program. Have knowledge and understanding of the Community Assessment Tool (RAI-HC and RAI-CA) and how it applies to clients. Will complete any other delegated tasks as required for the ongoing operation of the Day and Stay Program. While performing any and all duties of the position the employee will work in a safe and healthy manner and will follow the regulations outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act as outlined in the organization Health & Safety Policy, Infection Control and safe work procedures. Will adhere to JNH Policy # 2-A-10-Standards of Employee Conduct.
Responsibilities
- Plan, implement and evaluate all therapeutic client activities and recreation.
- In the absence of the Manager, internal management functions of directing, supervising, coordinating and staffing will be a component of this position.
- Assist with nutritional services including menu planning, food inventory, meal preparation and service.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment to meet the delivery of client programs and make recommendations for replacement or new items.
- Maintain a clean, organized and tidy work environment.

- Policy reviews
- Assist with orientation, supervision and evaluation of volunteers and students assigned to the Centre.
- Conduct audits of programs and material utilization as required as part of the quality improvement program for the Centre.
- As a member of the inter-discipline team participate in strategic planning and policy and procedure development.
- Provide emotional support for clients and family members.
- Follow all IPAC requirements
- Participate in policy development, setting goals and objectives and to be a part of the multi-disciplinary team.
- On call support for decision making and providing administrative support for staff in absence of Manager.
- Assist with implementation and evaluation of the Quality Assurance and Risk Management activities to ensure the safety and security of all clients and staff.
- Assist with assessments and reassessments of client social, recreational abilities
- Prepare monthly calendar of events for the Day Program, Overnight Stay Program
- Assist clients with their activities of daily living such as feeding, personal hygiene and toileting.
- Establish goals and identifies needs for individual clients in consultation with Manager, including behaviour modification programs. Develop and implement planned programs for each client.
- Assist with food preparation and supervision of clients during meals.
Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation Programming required.
- 3-5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Food Handler’s Course and maintaining current certification is required.
- Minimum 3 years working with persons with dementia/memory issues required.
- Certification in dementia care (Dementia Studies, Gerontology Certification, GPA certification) an asset.
- Working knowledge of relevant laws and regulations pertinent to the position (Health Care Legislation, PHIPPA) preferred.
- Exceptional accuracy and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with well developed verbal and written abilities.
- Knowledge and application of Point Click Care.
- Basic computer skills.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Good communication skills both verbally and in writing. Able to facilitate and lead individual groups.
- Good organization, leadership and delegation skills, works well as a team member as well as independently.
- Knowledge and application of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point are an asset
