Position Summary
The Integrated Substance Management Youth Worker (ISMYW) provides supervision and support to youth experiencing acute physical and emotional aspects of withdrawal with the goal of stabilizing the youth so that they may move on to the next phase of recovery. Once stabilization occurs youth will be integrated into the full FTAP programming routine. The ISMYW is responsible for initiating, mentoring and modeling healthy group or 1:1 youth-centered recreational or cultural activities, which further the youth’s substance management/recovery goals while in the program.
The ISMYW supports the overall goal of maintaining safe and supportive environments that optimize the health and well-being of all youth participants in Intervention Programs including FTAP/Turning Point/YP3. The Agency supports practice through a trauma informed lens, placing priority on the participant’s safety, choice and self-determination. The ISMYW is responsible for applying Agency Values and Code of Ethics to guide decision-making and professional behavior and complying with CARF accreditation standards, Agency policies, procedures and practices.

Wages: $27.54/hr
Term: Ongoing
Hours: 40hrs/week
Shift: Sunday & Monday: 7:00am - 3:00pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 2:00pm - 10:00pm
Location: Greater Victoria Area

Hours: 32 hrs/week
Shift: Sunday, Monday: 2:00pm - 10:00pm, Tuesday, Wednesday: 3:00pm - 11:00pm
Location: Greater Victoria Area

Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides supervision and support to youth in all aspects of either FTAP/TP/YP3 as assigned including detox and stabilization at the staffed resource
- Facilitates small group life skills, substance use education, resource connections, and community-based recreational, social, or cultural activities as directed to meet the evolving needs of youth and support pro-social engagement.
- Supports youth in following their individualized short-term goals as outlined in their service plan
- Facilitates youth engagement by actively participating in daily programming activities, including education support, life skills, drug and alcohol discussions, employment readiness and recreation to support youth skills development and manage dysregulation.
- Supports youth in making healthy lifestyle choices by providing education on nutritious meals and snacks, guiding meal preparation with healthy recipes, and participating in physical activities such as swimming, hiking, biking, and gym workouts. Teach healthy coping strategies, including using music, journaling, grounding techniques, and exercise as alternatives to substance use. Facilitate difficult conversations about the risks of gang involvement, the impact of a criminal record, and pathways out of high-risk lifestyles. Help youth establish and maintain routines for hygiene, sleep, nutrition and exercise
- Transports youth to appointments, activities, education and other programming
- Develops weekly menus, grocery shops and prepares meals and snacks according to established procedures
- Performs daily housekeeping duties as outlined in the daily shift tasks and responsibilities
- Performs basic building maintenance duties as needed
- Utilizes ethical and safe behavior management techniques, including Positive Behaviour Support, Non-violent Crisis Intervention and emotional regulation strategies to manage youth behavior during supervised activities. They set clear expectations, provide consistent routines, and establish structured environments to encourage youth awareness of acceptable behavior and support their ability to cope with emotional and behavioral challenges
- Utilizes teaching/learning strategies that are individualized to fit the youth's needs abilities and service plan
- Follows the case management plan developed by the Primary Youth Counselor and the youth to help them meet identified goals. Examples include assisting with preparation for the 'L' driver’s license, setting up practice exams, accompanying youth to testing appointments, transporting them to specific appointments, or working with them to build specific life skills outlined in their individual plan.
- Provides On-Call After Hours support services to any youth or family residing in Care Families. This includes responding to requests based on the Case Management Plan, such as approving overnight stays, supporting Care Families when a youth misses curfew or offering emotional support to youth during difficult times. All interactions are documented in the youth's file
- Identifies and supports recreational, social and/or cultural activities which will facilitate pro-social engagement (FTAP/TP/YP3)
- Models and teaches appropriate interpersonal skills, behaviours and addresses pro-criminal beliefs or behaviours
- Documents youth’s progress in their electronic file as per Intervention Program standards
- Promotes the use of self-advocacy skills for youth by coaching them in conversations to identify their strengths and skills, guiding them on how to effectively voice their needs and concerns when interacting with authority figures.
- Assists youth in complying with court-ordered reparative conditions by monitoring adherence to requirements such as curfews and sobriety, facilitating attendance at appointments with forensic and probation officers, and notifying probation officers of any breaches
- Supports youth in other Intervention (TP/YP3) or Agency programs as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested, which may include tasks not listed in this position description but are within the scope of the position, program and/or department

Minimum Qualifications
- Diploma in Criminal Justice, Child and Youth Care or Social Work or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education
- 1-year experience working with 13–19-year-old youth in residential settings
- Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practice
- Valid Basic First Aid certification and CPR C
- Valid Class 5 Drivers’ Licence, clear driver’s abstract and reliable vehicle
