Position Summary:
The Skilled Labourer supports all phases of our multifamily and residential projects - from excavation and civil groundwork through concrete formwork, framing and finishing. The ideal candidate likes to stay active, can handle high volumes of work during peak periods, takes direction well and can also work independently with minimal supervision. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain valuable long-term experience and keep growing within the company, including toward formwork, framing or equipment-operating roles.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Load and unload construction materials and move materials to work areas.
- Put up and take down shoring, barricades, fencing and temporary protection at construction sites.
- Assist with excavation, trenching, backfill and compaction activities.
- Assist pipelayers and civil crews with the installation of storm, sanitary and water utilities, including bedding, pipe placement, catch basins, manholes and service connections.
- Assist with the installation of drain rock, filter cloth, perimeter drainage, damp-proofing and under-slab services.
- Assist in building lock block and segmental retaining walls.
- Level earth to fine grade specifications using rake and shovel, and assist with granular placement and preparation of sub-base for slabs, curbs and paving.
- Set up and operate lasers, levels and grade rods, and check and hold elevations and grades.
- Assist heavy equipment operators in securing attachments, act as a spotter and signaller to guide equipment movement, and provide assistance in other activities.
- Assist with layout, erection, bracing, stripping and cleaning of concrete formwork for footings, walls, columns, slabs and stairs.
- Place and tie reinforcing steel, and install form ties, waler brackets, blockouts, keyways and embeds as directed.
- Assist during concrete placement by moving hose and chutes, vibrating, screeding, floating, edging, patching, and curing and protecting fresh concrete.
- Strip, clean, oil, sort, bundle and stockpile forming materials, panels and hardware for reuse.
- Assist framing crews with wood-frame construction, including material distribution, layout, wall and floor sheathing, joists, trusses, blocking, strapping and hardware installation.
- Operate hand and power tools safely and accurately, including circular saw, chop saw, nail gun, impact driver, drill, hammer, tape measure, chalk line and square.
- Assist with installation of temporary stairs, guardrails, hole covers, ladders and fall-protection anchorage in accordance with WorkSafeBC requirements.
- Assist with hoarding, weather protection, bathtub and finish protection, and other damage-prevention measures.
- Help demolish structures using prying bars and other tools, and sort, clean and pile salvaged materials.
- Remove rubble and other debris using rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, buggies and other equipment, and maintain waste separation and recycling bins.
- Tend or feed machines and equipment used in construction, such as mixers, compressors, pumps, generators, saws and compaction equipment.
- Assist with erosion and sediment control measures, dust control and site water management.
- Perform daily site clean-up and housekeeping, keep access routes, stairwells and work areas clear, and maintain tools, equipment and material storage in an orderly condition.
- Adhere to all applicable safety and environmental standards, regulations and company policies, participate in toolbox talks, field level hazard assessments and site orientations, and report hazards, near misses and incidents immediately.
- Perform other activities at construction sites as directed by the Site Superintendent or Foreman.
Skills and Qualifications
- 2+ years of construction labour experience preferred; experience on excavation and civil, concrete forming or wood-frame projects is a strong asset.
- Comfortable performing physical work outdoors year-round, including lifting up to 50 lbs, repetitive bending, climbing and working at heights.
- Able to read a tape measure accurately and follow verbal and written instruction, drawings and grade information.
- Competent and safe use of hand and power tools.
- Valid Class 5 B.C. driver's licence and reliable transportation to site preferred.
- Current safety tickets an asset, including Occupational First Aid Level 1, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Traffic Control, Aerial Work Platform, Forklift or Telehandler, WHMIS and CSTS.
- Strong attention to housekeeping, jobsite safety, punctuality and reliability.
- Team-oriented attitude with a willingness to learn and progress into formwork, framing, equipment operation or leadership roles.
