In my experience, the workplace culture was challenging due to frequent leadership changes  and communication gaps between corporate leadership and middle management/operational teams. While many employees were highly dedicated and committed to public service, morale was impacted by organizational uncertainty and a cautious workplace environment. Employees often felt hesitant to openly raise concerns or provide differing perspectives due to a general lack of accountability. Collaboration across departments could also be inconsistent, which sometimes created frustration and reduced trust within the organization. The organization would benefit from continued focus on transparent communication, leadership accountability, employee engagement, and fostering a culture where constructive feedback and open dialogue are consistently encouraged and supported. 

Worked here previously and it was ok, typical day was fast paced and steady work but it seems the management doesn’t abide by union standards and worker rights always. They micro manage you and talk badly behind your back which creates a very stressful workplace that isn’t very practical to be in. They preach rules that they don’t follow and slave drive you just to watch you work.. seriously it’s bad. They give their favourite employees the benefits of overtime etc. If they had a less “slave driving” team leader and a more professional manager, this place would be better. The manager often will put down other people in front of the staff and it’s just extremely inappropriate to say the least. Don’t expect to move up, and don’t expect to get your benefit ls easily. You want that holiday you’re entitled to? Well you’ll get a cold stare and glare for taking the time off because “we’re busy” ... truth is, we are always busy.

I Worked here as a mechanic. You will find yourself doing repetitive work including general inspections and brake jobs as they outsource more of the critical repairs like engine repairs to more capable places which was not always the case. Its okayish shifts  but there is a 5a.m. shift they don't advertise in the job description that can take a toll on the body which isn't fun.  It gets busy and vacation and time off generally get rejected If you call in sick you generally get rightly shunned by your superiors and it gets brought up as a negative on a yearly personnel review. 

Been with the city for a long time now as a heavy duty mechanic .spent most of my time a working at transit but buses became very very boring and repeatitive after a while and the leadership there needs alot of work to speak lightly.. so I decided to transfer to public works where there is more variety and more of a team atmosphere with way better leadership than the  power hungry leaders in the transit department. If your applying as a mechanic avoid the transit department and join public works for better work life balance, better tooling , training and a non aggressive childish approach when dealing with team leads and managers. 

Would not recommend working here. The shop environment is toxic and shop morale is very low. Management Micromanages, providing more work than solutions. I was excited to work for the city but there are way more negatives than positives.

Work is super bland finding yourself inspecting equipment and not repairing equipment. The shop is a poor design with no shop space, poor ventilation, and PPE not provided. shop tooling is at a minimum so find yourself paying for specific tooling or making your own.

If you are looking for a healthy lifeguarding work environment this is NOT the place for you (fountain park). I would not recommend this place to anybody. Although the pay might seem appealing, it should not come at the expense of your mental health. The problem starts at the very top of the ladder and trickles down onto each and every employee & leaves them feeling undervalued and unappreciated. Don’t waste your time, find somewhere that will value who you are and all the work that you can provide. 

Loved the people I worked with (most anyways). Pay was decent and the benefits were better than average.

The job was made more difficult than needed to be as other departments don't know how to "stay in their lanes" and didn't respect our department.  Also, we were very understaffed which was OK until someone went on vacation. Then there was just auxiliary that came in and they were kinda useless. 

Ultimately,  if you have a chill attitude you would do well working at the City 

Ps parking sucks

The atmosphere is certainly a lot more laid back than other places I've worked in the past, and for me that makes it leaps and bounds more enjoyable than all the other jobs I've had. You're not pressed to finish as fast as you can but you are still expected to complete your job within a reasonable amount of time; so there are less errors being made in misdiagnoses and rushed labor. Overall I think the calmness of the workplace greatly influences how productive the people in the garage are, which in turn keeps them happy to work.

The variety of equipment to work on in the public works shop.

Dealing with the union and upper management.

With other employees and team leads it was great. 
With the union and upper management it was a 
Disaster. Extremely poor upper management. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start at 7am and finish at 3:30pm with a very moderate pace all day.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Breathing in exhaust fumes from 50 busses in the morning

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Being micromanaged, in a poorly designed facility. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
If you have any sick days or need personal time off you will be belittled and told by management that fellow coworkers don't have respect for you.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Mainly inspecting equipment. Minimum diagnosing.
