Donalda Golf & Country Club

I worked at the Donalda club for about 5 years. Looking back at my experience after I have left the club often leaves me feeling frustrated. 

I had put many hours into being the best I can be for this company and by the time I was ready to move to a better opportunity, I was left feeling unfairly treated. 

There is a toxic culture that is encouraged by management, it all starts from the top and I believe that this is Donalda's main issue. 

The GM's main message is fairness and equality for all staff. I had never found that to be true. She had repeated that message so very often, that it felt rehearsed and insincere. Not to mention the lack of  truth behind that message.

I am not a soar employee that did not get rewarded for my hard work, I did very well within this company. I am not writing this review out of anger towards management, I am just simply stating the truth about how I felt at times and how I saw and felt the environment from my own perspective and the perspective of my fellow staff members.   

...I always find myself thinking about one unique part  about management at the Donalda club and that is; How is it that the HR manager is also the executive assistant to the GM? If that is not a conflict of interest then I don't know what is.

Speaking of the HR department at the Donalda Club, when you have a serious issue that underlines change or truth, well then be warned. The dirt under Donalda's Club carpet is quiet the pile. There is always a hidden agenda and when you don't think that there is, I bet you that there is! I have never in my career encountered a HR manger that does not seem to understand the HUMAN in HUMAN RESOURCES. Words will be twisted and intentions will most likely be changed. 

Donalda is a place for students fresh out of college to have a company with a "prestigious" name put on their resume. The name will get you somewhere, the experience might leave you stressed out.

The grass is greener on the other side in this case...

Worked at Donalda full time for 5 seasons.  In terms of places to work in the golf industry, you would be hard pressed to find a better place to work than Donalda.  Salaried employees are offered either full-time or close to full-time positions which is not common in the golf industry.  Golf team was fantastic, supportive and high camaraderie and opportunity to teach.  Generally good membership and opportunity to meet good people.    

Nonetheless, working in the golf business means working in the customer service and hospitality industry.  This means shift work, weekends and working majority (if not all) statutory holidays from spring to fall.  Teaching permissible outside of work hours - which makes for very long days if you want to make a decent salary (base pay was just average at best).  Small percentage of membership was hard to deal with, and interactions with them were of high frequency.     

If you know what you're signing up for, Donalda is a very good place to work.

Everyone is paid a different rate (seniority means nothing). Way over staffed for the amount of work yet they never let people leave early because they’re too concerned about image. You get two uniforms which everyone complains about because they’re black polyester which makes everyone sweat in the sun and can be scheduled 5 days in a row. Extreme favouritism, lack of communication, senior staff get away with everything they want 

This position would be a good location for individuals new to the hospitality industry. The work and requirements are far easier to remember and manage than in a restaurant. While this Golf Club offers a restaurant there is very little stress compared to working in a more fast paced location. 
Therefore if an individual is looking for a location to begin in the hospitality industry, the Donalda club should be on their list of potential places of employment. 

It should be known that there is not much room for advancement, unless you are an employee for many years, therefore, if you are ambitious, this location would be a good beginning. However, it may not be ideal for long term employment.

Groundscrew! the management treats staff horribly, ask anyone who’s been there longer than a week and they’ll tell you EXACTLY who the problem is. I’m not kidding every single worker here had bad things to say about the co-superintendent, and for the superintendent, I was there for 2 months and he never even introduced himself to me or got my name. If you’re looking for a toxic work environment this is the place to go. I’ve worked in groundskeeping for almost 7 years now at 4 different courses across Canada and I’ve never seen management as bad as this. Horrible.

There is a reason there is such a high turnover rate. HR is a total nightmare where they scam you out of every penny they can. One example being the dollar bonus they give to employees that work the whole summer contract. HR can just decide you don't deserve the dollar bonus for whatever reason such as taking the day off. HR is a mess when it comes to scheduling, they don't tell you your schedule you have to just get it from word of mouth. Another fun example is when they made everyone have to come into work a half hour early without telling anyone. Management is also a nightmare, the on site manager throws ballistic fits whenever something goes wrong. 

Loved working at the Donalda, as was a server and host for the outdoor patio (during the pandemic) 
The interview process was more like a conversation.

The training was relax and very informative. They want to make sure every employee is set for success 

Working at the Donalda Club feels like a family business. Everyone is very friendly, willing to help eachother and you will have the tools to do a great job. 

I made great friends here and learned so much. 
If you work at the Donald’s club as a seasonal employee you will live your experience and it’s a name you want on your resume. Will definitely open doors 

Donalda is such a great place to be! The facilities are beautiful, all the staff are very friendly and welcoming right from day one. You really feel at home working here and it is such a wonderful place to be! I truly love my job and couldn’t be happier to be part of the Donalda Family. There is lots of room for growth and you feel very appreciated working here.
I would recommend this company to anybody looking to be a part of a big family and great team! The people who work at Donalda truly makes the job even more enjoyable! 

Although this position was fine at the beginning, staff was very discouraged and patrons can be very rude. The kitchen set-up is also difficult and the large menu means a lot of running around for serving staff. As it is a private club there are no tips, but above average service is required. 

Good starting position if you plan to go further in hospitality but not much else other than that.

I used to work for the golf department, and I joined around Autumn or so, and it was a very nice time, there have been a few slips here and there but mostly it was enjoyable to be there. But from the people that have been there for years I've heard that spring and summer are very busy and you can barely catch a break, but other than that, a decent workplace.
