Heritage Skills Development Centre

This org has had same director for over 30 years, so is slow to change, but sadly management is not able to take feedback or employee input into consideration. This is unfortunate, because even in my short time there, I watched so many great ideas of coworkers be shut down repeatedly, until they stopped offering new ideas. 

We were discouraged from taking breaks together, even from collaborating on work projects. Was very isolating and lonely to work here, despite how nice coworkers seemed. Felt even worse for the revolving door of unpaid interns, who pick up labour slack of any tasks, regardless of position placement students are working. I saw fellow addictions and mental health placement students (they have no staff in related departments!) spend days doing marketing calls for a music festival, soliciting cash sponsorships.

Beyond this, have never seen such obvious gaslighting and intimidation tactics in any workplace, but is especially disappointing to see in the non-profit space. Turnover here is very high for a reason, I would not recommend this workplace at all, to anyone.

This office recruits unpaid placement students but does not have employees with experience in those same areas to supervise. At times it seemed like there were more placement students and unpaid interns than actual staff. Did not learn anything new about my career of choice and only did unrelated administrative tasks.

Very difficult to get class forms filled on time or have supervisor meeting. No chance to job shadow either.

A typical day at work involved inputting various types of data into Excel, writing letters to vendors and sponsors about the community events or taking phone calls regarding anything the company is involved in. The management was good, but could be better by having a nicer office more staff. My co workers were all lovely people who worked hard and met their deadlines on the tasks given.Hardest part of the job is to send out hundreds of emails in a short span of time. Most enjoyable part was to be able to work with amazing people.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to intern at Heritage Skills Development Centre. From day one, I was welcomed into a dynamic and supportive team that truly values growth and learning. The company's commitment to innovation and excellence is palpable in every project I've been involved in. Throughout my internship, I've been exposed to a diverse range of tasks that have not only enhanced my skills but also provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the industry.

They keep saying the Graphic Design is a internship, but why it is a internship if in the future the company won't pay you as a Graphic Designer? They want you to make the graphic design works but there is no future working at the company, only just the experience, they also don't give you respect as a graphic designer.

HSDC management are approachable, flexible and friendly. The hardest part is cutting through red tape . HSDC needs more improvement and advancement and proper management  to ensure that an appropriate work life balance is maintained. I love my job, it is thoroughly enjoyable. 

They weren’t clear about position and give and expect you to do more than explained in the job summary. Lack of organization and support for media. There isn’t actually a media coordinator to report to. They take advantage of immigrants. 

Worked as a volunteer, and they take advantage of you.
Plus, it's a very dark and secluded office too, and they give you work non-related to the organization. The management is not friendly, especially when you're volunteering for them.

During my time as an intern, I was exposed to a range of meaningful projects that allowed me to contribute to their noble mission. The supportive and collaborative environment fostered by the team made me feel valued and empowered. 

very understanding staff; easy to work for and with; meet interesting people from different professions and a lot of room for growth, never bored and lots of interesting projects to work on
