LUSO Community Services

I had the absolute pleasure of working with a diverse, dynamic and compassionate team at LUSO Community Services for half a decade.  Most notably, I enjoyed both trust and autonomy from management from day one as I undertook the development, delivery and evaluation of a (then) brand-new program within the organization.  The trust and support that management afforded me in this experience allowed me to cultivate essential leadership skills and develop key transferable skills that continue to serve me well in the context of my present role at another community-based organization.  Most importantly, management's collaborative approach and trust allowed me to ground programming in community members' experiences/insights to ensure its relevance and also allow for a nimble/proactive structure that could respond effectively to community wants/needs.

I experienced the overall working environment at LUSO Community Services as positive, collaborative and supportive; I maintain ongoing connections/relationships with both management and staff.  I cherished my time at the organization and within my specific role - it provided me with strong and supportive working relationships, great opportunities for professional development and allowed me to cultivate skills and experiences that effectively prepared me for future work in a management role.  

The opportunity to do work in support of the diverse communities that we were/are so fortunate and privileged to serve in ways that resonated/were meaningful to these communities is something I continue to value and appreciate beyond measure.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at LUSO Community Services. It is the best community minded, neighbourhood resource that I have worked at in my 10+ years of community work. 

Being a community based organization, you definitely get what you put in. Building rapport with clients takes time and effort that has to be part of your day to day work. Yes the days can be busy and sometimes stressful but that comes along with the nature of the work. If that's not for you then community based programming may not be the field to get in to. 

I have been fortunate enough to meet some of the best coworkers I have ever had here at LUSO. Anyone who excels in this environment has the same goal in mind, and this job would be nothing without collaboration. The ED has an open door policy and will make time to meet, even in the middle of reports/applications.

Coming from previous workplaces with zero benefits, zero paid time off, no paid sick days and low wages, it was definitely a bonus coming to work for a non-profit organization that offers a benefits package, paid vacation, paid sick days and higher than market wages. If you put in the work, the ED will recognize it and will find ways to advance your career. I have never felt my job was at risk due to funding and have never felt micromanaged. I have had the most autonomy here and trust placed in me that I am capable at my job. 

Potlucks, celebrations, and gatherings are just an added bonus. 

I worked for LUSO for two years before I relocated out of the province. In my role I had the opportunity to work with several different LUSO employees. Everyone worked hard to support clients and worked well as part of the team. The Director has good relationship with community partners as she has been in the role for a very long time. She was supportive and provided guidance to me during challenging times. She's very committed to LUSO and the community; I know she worked many long hours to ensure the organization had funding and continued to grow. She pushes individuals to do their best- but I always found her fair, responsive and approachable. When I was employed at LUSO there were opportunities for staff development and growth- we were encouraged to push ourselves out of our comfort zone. The Board of Directors was also very supportive, they took time to get to know employees  and what we did. Although my time at LUSO was short, the position I held and the support I received helped prepare me for other roles I have held over the past 8 years. Having now worked in the private sector and corporate sector, I appreciate the autonomy I had at LUSO- it's something I don't think I really valued until I did not have it anymore.

I have been with LUSO for almost 2 years and I hope I get to work here until I retire... I have a job that I love and I am part of a great organization.
In my job, I welcome newcomer families into our schools and facilitate their settlement process in the community. This involves giving them information and referring them to programs in the community in order to help them re-establish themselves in Canada. This job also involves building strong relationships with newcomer families and supporting them so they do not get discouraged along the re-settlement process. This job is as challenging as it is rewarding for it involves making an impact in peoples lives.
LUSO's team is comprised of knowledgeable, caring and passionate individuals that are supportive of each other and whose main drive is to make a positive impact in our community. We come from multicultural backgrounds, we have different educational credentials, we have worked in a variety of fields, and we have diverse life experiences, but we respect and enjoy each other and that makes LUSO a great place to work.
Our management is approachable, smart, and committed and they inspire me to keep on giving and growing. They offer us plenty of training and self-development opportunities for professional as well as personal growth. There is a culture of caring and team work that makes me proud of being part of LUSO.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a member of the LUSO team. As a new graduate, I was able to apply my education to my role and programs, as well as, build many meaningful relationships with clients in the community. During my employment, LUSO's staff and management continued to provide me with support, encouragement, constructive feedback, as well as, laughs and fond memories! The bonds I made with certain staff members and my supervisor made me understand the term "work family" to a new level. 
A key strength that I admire about LUSO is the resilience and adaptability of staff and management. Despite all COVID-19 restrictions and limitations, LUSO staff and management were determined to continue to offer programs and services to the community whether virtual or in person. 
During my time at LUSO, I was welcomed with kindness, respect and flexibility by staff and management. In addition to this, my direct supervisor was also the executive director of the organization and I found it admirable to see that through her "behind the scenes" work, advocacy, and dedication, LUSO continues to flourish and expand. Management continues to provide support, constructive feedback and encouragement of front line workers. 
If you want to be employed somewhere where your work is meaningful and that you are making a difference, LUSO is the place for you!

Working at LUSO was a great experience. On a day to day basis I had the opportunity to learn and develop new skills and continue to challenge myself, especially out of my comfort zone. Management was supportive in helping me to grow and develop skills I didn't even know I had. I can truly say that I began to see my own potential and growth in a different way.  Management although firm they are very fair and supportive. The organization values employees that are professional, ethical, honest, respectful and accountable for their actions.  So for an employee that might not hold these same values, then LUSO might not be a good fit  as employer and employee expectations might not align. The staff team at LUSO was very diverse and supportive of each other when I worked there. People would pitch in and help out with reception duties when she was on vacation or sick.  There were opportunities to get to know peers through monthly potlucks, birthday celebrations, holiday gathering and training opportunities.  
I learned so much working with such  diverse community members and staff members at LUSO.  Working at LUSO provided me with strong foundation for the role I have now at another non-profit.   

Working at LUSO was a wonderful experience.  The position allowed me to learn about the needs of the community and provided me the autonomy to be creative and develop programs to best meet those needs.  There were also opportunities to work across departments and support various families, children, and clients in a number of different ways which strengthened my personal skillsets and was critical to my professional development.  Management was incredibly supportive, not only in the development and delivery of programs, but also in providing Professional Development and continued learning opportunities to staff.  All of LUSO's managers and leadership are incredibly hard-working, committed, and supportive of their teams; they are open to feedback and ideas and are collaborative where possible.  The work culture at LUSO is also very positive: I had wonderful relationships with my colleagues but you get back what you put in.  Overall, my time at LUSO was overwhelmingly positive and the work was so rewarding.  I would certainly recommend this employer to those individuals looking to work hard and make a difference in the community.

Working at LUSO Community Services has been the best work experience of my career.  I have felt incredibly supported by my direct supervisor as well as the staff at LUSO.  The collaborative nature of the work allows staff to be creative, have autonomy over their programs, and learn from the diverse workforce that LUSO employs.  The work itself is incredibly rewarding and self-motivating as LUSO supports so many different groups of people and families in Northeast London and Argyle neighbourhoods.  

The organization is led by a dedicated, intelligent, and incredibly capable Executive Director who, despite her position, remains intimately connected to the needs of the community.  The organization has a strong strategic vision to grow and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the community.  Personally, I have been given numerous opportunities for professional development, I have been able to work across departments to broaden my skill-set, and I have been afforded opportunities to both mentor staff and students and be mentored by organization leadership.

Overall a great place to work. Very diverse staff team of about 30 people, Although everyone has different roles and responsibilities and manages different programs, when it is truly needed people come together as a team. Good collaborative spirit. Individuals care about their work and the community and overall everyone gets along. There aren't various levels of management, so Director is approachable and has open door policy and is very supportive of the team. She is efficient, organized and has been in the role for almost 25 years- so definitely committed. For employees that are responsible, dedicated, care about their work, the community and do what they are paid to do, this is a great organization with lots of opportunities for growth and development and autonomy. If you are a "slacker" this is not a good place for you. There are expectations and you are held accountable for the job you have been hired to do.

Working at LUSO Community Services was an incredibly meaningful experience from beginning to end.

The role could definitely be demanding at times, especially when supporting clients with urgent needs and balancing multiple responsibilities - however, the work ALWAYS felt rewarding and impactful.

Management was consistently professional, thoughtful, and supportive, creating an environment where employees felt respected and valued. What truly made the experience exceptional, though, was the phenomenal staff and fellow co-workers. Everyone was collaborative, compassionate, and genuinely committed to helping both clients and one another succeed. I cannot name a better team to have been a part of.

This position gave me valuable professional experience while also allowing me to contribute to work that positively impacts the community. I’m grateful for the time I spent there and would highly recommend it to anyone passionate about helping others and working within a strong, supportive, and very hard-working team.
