Most of the supervisors of the crews I was with were very helpful. Although the shop managers don’t have a clue what goes on seeing as they have never done the jobs that take place away from their desks. They are always on you about completing tasks within a set amount of time even if the parts have not came in or it still had to be inspected and everyone is on edge when they step out of there office because 9 times out of 10 they are coming to get mad over something the workers can’t control. Many people I had worked with complained about these things but no one will speak up. New management should definitely be a discussion at MaXfield. As well as most people who work at Max have been there for more then 5 years so when new policies are being implemented only a small group of people are willing to actually partake. Night shift is a joke when it comes to safety. Something to also mention is people are kept around due to their personal relationship with another employee and not because of their experience and understanding of the job because even though someone who has been working there for a year still doesn’t understand how to preform the most basic of tasks nothing is done because they were brought on by their father in law. No one is happy about what they do, people are bullies, there is poor leadership and almost everyone is burnt out. 

I have my bluebook and am a registered welding apprentice. Maxfield does their apprenticeships by seniority so they would not sign my bluebook until after a year if not more. If you have a bluebook and are already registered and started working here it would take a year before they would even look at your bluebook. It would be a very huge waste of time for an already registered apprentice. 

The "raise" the foreman/supervisor offers after 3 months is completely false. 2 employees have quit due to this during my stay. Current employees have told me not to count on this company to keep its promises to its employees. 

During my stay I did not learn a single thing at maxfield, I quite literally got hired, given a broom and was told to sweep or put outside for fire watch. I would not recommend this company as an employer. Unless you are a ticketed journeyman, this company will treat you like nothing. Several persons I've worked with were either stoned or hiked up on cocaine at work which made it feel very weary and unsafe to work.

I worked in QC. Really enjoyed it. Great people, benefits. Lots to learn. Pay for training. Awesome christmas party. Very safety conscious. One of the largest vessel manufacturers in Calgary area so you really see the whole picture as they do whole packages: structural, piping, new construction, in service. Mainly propane / lpg / ammonia service. Large diameter bullets / pressurized cargo transports.

For me the downside was that I wanted to make top rate and they didn't want to pay me that much, so I went somewhere that paid more. I didn't hold it against them since they need to balance their budget as well, but it was just time for me to move on.

Been employed at Maxfield coming on 5 years now, and I've done nothing but learn new things all the time. Advancement can come very quick as long as your willing to be diversified and keep your head in the game. Started off as a assembler then worked my way up to a welder which I gained my red seal from, and also was made inspector and tester for pressure vessels. Good balance of field and shop work, Alot of OT if you're up for it in the summer time, very flexible if you need days off. Upper management can be disorganized( example :shipping all the right parts for a field job, blueprints, timing).
Other than that,  great company.

Typically you will find out the scope of work when you are completed and have to do the job again.
I learned there are many people with two faces.
Management is clueless, promoting people that lack the skills to manage.
Work place culture there is a place where you put people down and spread lies about them.
The hardest part of the job was going every day knowing you don’t want to be there because of workplace culture, backstabbers and thieves.
The most enjoyable part of the job was quitting time.

Management was very unorganized and has very little structure, often had to chase down lead hand to given tasks for the day. Management did not care about safety, modifying safety switches and sweeping incidents under the rug. Management and many of the lifetime employees are opposed to change or finding a better/safer way of doing things. Often ignoring welding Codes and Using Down-hand Metal-core for structural welds.  Rigging was in poor shape and not inspected regularly. Pay is much higher than in Calgary and the benefits are alright

Don’t know if you have a job from week to week because of the POOR management! Tell you one thing and do the opposite to make themselves look good! TOXIX!!

Good company, especially in such a rural area. Almost everyone at the company knows someone, that's the best way to get hired, they value recommendations from their employees. Culture is really relaxed, quite social.

There's not a lot of room for upward momentum in any of the departments, the company is small and has people in management that are comfortable where they are.

Pay rate is good if you work in welding, it's on the lower end for most other positions. You have to push pretty hard for a raise, but most managers will go to bat for you to get one.

I greatly enjoyed my time at Maxfield.  Worked with a great group of people, projects were complex & diverse, management was great, pay and benefits were good.  I enjoyed and looked forward going to work every day.

However, the privately owned company was purchased by a publicly owned company.  And with that there always comes the eventual changes.  Hopefully for everyone there it stays a great place to work, but that future is unknown.

BAD MOODS TOWARDS NEW EMPLOYES. when u try to make the company more money and be more efficient. when it comes to cost time and productivity . to be more time effective . with less cost u would think that the company would want that employe to be happy. and take a step back and listen to want they had to say.  well, that is why I am not employed with Maxfield anymore. people that have been there for a long time do not make it easy for other people trying to make a living at a new job..............
