Specialty testing. The work pace is fast with a steep learning curve. For those of us that perform specialty work, there is a requirement to have knowledge of hand tools, power equipment, construction industry, safety, and specialized equipment. I operate ground penetrating radar (GPR) units for the purpose of concrete core extraction, surveys of reinforcing steel, special investigations, etc. Additionally, I specialize in anchor testing and various types of load applications for structural, civil, and geotechnical. On top of all of the technical expertise, there is a requirement for technical writing, use of Word and Excel, for preparing reports for engineers and clients.

Great work environment with very supportive managers and engineering leaders. Even while working in Fort St. John, I had the opportunity to collaborate with engineers from the Lower Mainland and learn from their experience, which added a lot of value to my development.

This is a very good company for early-career growth in geotechnical engineering. I was able to gain hands-on experience in project management, proposal writing, and client communication. The team is patient with the learning process and truly supports professional development.

They also provide strong support for the EIT process and encourage growth toward obtaining your P.Eng, which makes a big difference for young engineers starting their careers.

Working at a branch outside of the lower mainland I've had the opportunity to work on many different projects and gain a variety of skills that I may not have had I worked elsewhere.  The employees at our branch generally get along and we feel a bit like a family, getting together outside of work hours or helping out each other.  There can be long hours during the summer and minimal hours during the winter but that's the nature of consulting work and living somewhere with snow.  On the plus side, we can take long vacations in the winter.  There is hiking and fishing and other outdoor pursuits in the area.

Metro is a solid company that offers a lot of opportunities for growth and learning. My experience has been very enjoyable, as I’ve had the chance to develop new skills and learn a lot in my role.

That said, one thing to note is that your experience at Metro can depend quite a bit on the branch you work at and the branch manager in charge. For me personally, I’ve been lucky to have a positive and supportive work environment, but I’ve heard that this can vary across locations.

Overall, I’d recommend Metro as a workplace, especially if you’re someone who values learning on the job and can adapt to different management styles.

Metro has given me a chance to educate myself in many different aspects of materials testing and geotechnical engineering. I have been able to work on a variety of different project types and become comfortable walking into any sort of construction environment. The days can be very long in the summer, and field work is not typically busy in the winter, but the overtime and double time pay or banked hours in the summer really make up for it. The people I have worked with were amazing and I'm happy to have gained a huge network in my 5 years with the company. 

The company boasts an incredibly supportive and collaborative culture, making it a great place for professional growth. The leadership genuinely cares about employee well-being and fosters an environment that encourages innovation and teamwork. Colleagues are friendly and always ready to help, creating a positive and motivating atmosphere. The company also offers excellent opportunities for career advancement and skill development. I have worked at Metro for nine years and I feel I have learned so much about the company and the scope of work.  Managers at Metro will always answer any questions you may have and always support you.  Even though it is a large company it always has a family atmosphere.   The Managers are very generous with meals for all employee's  for different multicultural events, service awards and monetary gifts for employee's milestones for length of service.

As a newer employee everyone is always willing to help and assist when you ask for it. Management and supervisors are generally easy going and very fair, but also crack down when it comes to important work. This results in a good work/life balance. Lots of opportunities to learn new skills and improve existing ones. The job can be demanding but if you have a good attitude, strong work ethic and are looking to become an expert in your field then Metro is the place for you. 

Services company feeling the effects of economy. 75 percent owned by equicapita in Calgary. The other 25 % is shareholders. The company needs to buy the share holders but has no cash. Lease of a new head office and major turnover, one good thing it's multi cultural blend. Shaky when the going gets tough. Top heavy, offices are not in unity,  weak offices and turn over pull down opportunities of new business. They want cake and eat it too.
