What is the best part of working at the company?
There wasn’t- they’re uncompassionate, unforgiving, and very rigid. I can’t work there because they have such intolerance to anyone who is different. For example I wore my Cross every day, but they weren’t willing to tolerate my belief.  The older is yell at the students that are just plain boys that cannot sit down. I witnessed some of the harshest treatment of young Students.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working with the other EA’s that thought they were better. There’s two categories: there’s one that is casual and then there’s the others that are full-time. Most of the time the job is boring and you’re not doing anything, you’re not teaching and you’re not enjoying your job you’re just babysitting or just standing around aimlessly there’s no one to work with. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Unfriendly, non-welcoming. If you’re casual, you’re kind of sidelined because you’re not important there is no group sense there’s no belonging to the company it just feels like you’re aimlessly wandering and leaving without anyone making contact with you. The secretaries are usually not helpful.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You check in  at the office, you usually meet a grumpy secretary that hates her job, they assign you a room you have to get used to a brand new teacher and a brand new classroom every day. The job is very stressful because you always feel like an outsider. If the teacher doesn’t introduce you, you really feel like you’re not there.

The administration does not adequately support staff and is often unresponsive to emails. I recommend getting everything in writing, as they may attempt to backtrack on their commitments.

The leadership is very disorganized. During emergencies, LST's and administration are in some cases unavailable or on break.   

Staff breaks are often overlooked, with several employees not receiving their 20-minute break for an entire month. 

Staff members frequently feel pressured and coerced into working with students. There have been instances where administration explicitly stated, "To secure your job here, we are giving you the opportunity to work with X" This creates a sense of insecurity and discomfort among employees, as they feel their job stability depends on taking on roles in which they feel unsafe. 

CUPE 389 has developed a reputation for being an ineffective union. It’s often challenging to reach your union representative, as they are frequently on vacation or out of the office for extended periods. Unfortunately, this leads to a lack of support when you need it most, leaving members feeling frustrated and underserved.

LIF hours were unavailable for the first few weeks of September. The hiring freeze led to a massive shortage of staff. 




Working as an Educational Assistant in the North Vancouver School District has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The district's commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment is evident in its approach to education and its treatment of staff. The teamwork and collaboration among colleagues is exceptional, creating a positive work atmosphere.
One of the most satisfying aspects of this role is the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of students. Whether it's assisting children with special needs, providing extra support in the classroom, or aiding in their social and emotional development, the impact is tangible. The district also invests in professional development and training for its staff, ensuring we stay current with best practices in the field.
The only potential drawback could be the demanding nature of the job, as it requires patience, adaptability, and the ability to handle various challenges. However, the rewards of watching students grow and succeed far outweigh any challenges. Overall, working for the North Vancouver School District as an Educational Assistant is a fulfilling and meaningful career choice.


Working with kids is the best part of this job. You get to have lots of fun with the kids, and knowing that they are succeeding due to your hard work is very rewarding.

Management and training are overall very poor. There are some good bosses out there for sure, but overall the training is atrocious and unless you go out of your way to learn the skills you need yourself, you will not get much support, if any, when in a challenging situation. Also the pay is really, really terrible for the work that you put into it.

Great flexibility as I was studying whilst working.  Enjoyed being with children at a time when I had young children.  Hours worked well with family commitments.  Great culture in certain elementary schools.  Learned office procedures and assisted in the classrooms as well as supervise children at recess and lunchtime.

Hardest part of the job is getting a read on different administrators / teaching /non-teaching staff to be sure everyone is on the same page as pertains to integration  of students with special needs into the full school community.
Most enjoyable:  watching and being a part of the progress and development of individual students.

Moving from school to school as a casual EA allowed me to see which school was best for me to call home. Getting in at the school that was a good fit made work a enjoyable, even with the challenges of some students.

its friendly and easy-going vibe, most of the staff are helpful and  professional .

I am very  enthusiastic to recommend and will be very grateful in joining the team of these two respectable company or employer…+ It was a legacy of satisfaction  + fulfilment and most stability…+

Meaningful work, decent pay per hour, benefits, dedicated people...support staff are WAY underpaid... unless you live with someone else, there is no way to afford living anywhere near where you work after deductions, union dues etc
