Onboard roles are physically demanding, expect 12-14 hours on your feet a day. You sometimes get very long days when the train is late, sometimes over 20 hours (the longest I worked was 19 hours), and then have to wake up four hours later to work another shift.

The pay is very competitive, and with the long hours you can expect a healthy paycheque.

I was disappointed by the way the management treated the staff. Not with overt cruelty, but there was a culture of silence and a general disregard for the wellbeing of individuals. I was frustrated by this, because it seemed unnecessary; there seemed to be little thought given to the needs of employees, and this neglect ultimately seems to have created an unhealthy work culture. The expectations of the job were so high that many of my coworkers took pride in working to the point of injuring themselves, and for people who could not reach that standard there was no support. 

Given the level of commitment the company was asking for and the lack of support for employees, I would say that this is borderline exploitative. I wouldn't say that to my coworkers out of respect for their hard work, but in my heart I feel it to be true. I was saddened by the fate of employees who couldn't maintain these standards; they would typically quit after or during their first trip. 

And I just feel that so much of that suffering could have been avoided with more support from the company. My advice to management is, fix your toxic work culture that encourages employees to believe that masochism is strength, and create a work culture that lets people thrive. Given that the Rocky Mountaineer is a iconic Canadian institution, I am disappointed by their treatment of the onboard staff.

The RM offers significant opportunities and competitive pay for onboard staff, but I ultimately found the job too dehumanizing to be worth returning to. If you are physically fit and in good mental health then this may be good job for you, but work here at your own risk.

Had a great position aboard the train, working for and entertaining passengers for a 2 day journey.  Helped them sign in, then board the train.  Served them 2 main meals and snacks during the day.  And constant beverage service.  We also had to entertain the guests with constant commentary (speaking of the different sights they where coming up to, history of Canada and the amazing historians of Canada) also answering any questions and general conversation with the guest.   The main part of the position was customer safety, ensuring they moved around the train in a safe manner and if injured aiding them in the proper manner from their injury.  
Worked in groups of 4 or by yourself depending on which car you where on (gold leaf 4 person or Red leaf, working by yourself)
Loved the people I worked with.  Always interaction with your fellow worker and constant reassurance from them or you to them.  
The hours where long but because of my fellow work mates and the passengers my job was so enjoyed that the hours where considered enjoyable as apposed to be labouring.
A particular reason the position was so enjoyed , the passengers.  They themselves made you happy to do your position, when they got off the train after their 2 day adventure and they would give you a hug saying thank you for making this the best two days of our vacation, it gave one much pride and love for the position as onboard attendant
The company was a great company to work for unfortunately things went a little south when they decided to bring in different management team, whom locked us out due to a labour dispute in which lasted 2 seasons and the loss of all our positions.

Rocky Mountaineer is known for its amazing five star customer service and food. Along with many other things from our luxury train travel full of amazing scenery and great story telling and commentary along the route. Its is an everyday learning process on and off board the train. I have learnt a number of stories and historical facts about the areas we travel in beautiful British Columbia and also in Alberta. Travelling through terrain that early explorers travelled through when first settling in our province. 
Rocky is always providing room for advancement for their employees and they always make you feel loved and welcome back each season. There is nothing like meeting new people everyday at work people coming from all different parts of the world. With the sheer beauty of the train and the excellent service provided we make life changing experiences for our guests. I could go on and on about the love and passion I have for the organization but I would eventually run out of room.

The money is really good if you are willing to work for it. Long long days

Your team gets rotated weekly ( front house and kitchen staff) you never know with whom you are gonna be working. Sometimes is a good match sometimes is going to be a long trip

You would find your group of friends, everyone is nice. I’d say the environment around some of the management team is not great. Some
Of them can be toxic and not give any support or feedback. You can never ask for help, they will make it seem like is your problem. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You will work a minimum of 14 to 16 hours per day, 4 days per week. Sometimes you will have to work in an unequipped kitchen and you will have to deal with a lot of stressful situations. Don’t expect help from any of the managers. They won't help.

Pay is golden, but you'll work your absolute butt off. Employee culture on the train is very high-school-like and clique-like, mostly in the realm of on-board hosts, some managers are very supportive and others chaotic and bully-like. Ultimately there is always someone you will feel safe and secure with reach out to in the company.
They are working on their Indigenous provided history for their storytelling, but its also very strict and sometimes awkward of what you're allowed to talk about or not.

Assuring the wheel chair passenger lift is in working condition and operating in a safe manner for all the guest

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start your shift assist with luggage loading and organizing, group meeting with co workers management and staff training  preparation for the day of or day after the next scheduled train. Assist with clean up or setting up to create a seamless operation for the guest

Leaders don't make sound decisions. Too many things revolve around office politics, many great people have left due to this.(Highest turnover I have experienced).  Lack of clarity on business focus; driven by used car salesmen tactics.  Many managers and directors need more training on how to lead a team effectively especially in IT. Lots of talk about people being a top priority but little understand what the pain points are of their people. Work here while you find something better or till you can't take all the self aggrandizing town halls which seem to focus on executives pumping up their bloated egos for all to see..


Plenty of great people have left and let's not forget the history of unionized workers striking.

I loved everything about this company, I made incredible life long friends / memories. typical day at work is easy going you will get everything ready before the train comes in.  I learned that i like being guide to the guests and being helpful. management is wonderful, never had issue other than deciding where they would to go for dinner after work.  the hardest part of this job is the season ending, I was going to miss my family that I've gotten to know an love.  EVERYTHING was enjoyable, I got to ride on the train free from one city to my home town and had amazing food/company. if you want a fun summer job this is the job for you  

For departure, I start work at 5:30 am. I either stay at the station to do check in or any other assignment, or I get sent to one of the partner hotels to do check ins and storytelling onboard a motor coach with a maximum of 50 guests. I learned how to handle high touch guests and solve problems on my own and with the help of the team. Management is very hands on with employees and make sure everyone is comfortable and well trained in their position. All your co workers are very friendly and is always willing to help you whenever you're in need. Most enjoyable part of my job as a Destination Host is having to meet and talk to several guests from all over the world and learning their culture!
