I've learned so much working for the school district in the past 5 years. I have been an Educational Assistant in a general classroom and also have been working with students one on one. I've been in both elementary schools and high schools and I prefer the high schools. I've gained a lot of social emotional skills. For example, I am very intuitive to people's emotions and I can read people very well, I am very driven and can handle my own. I love the people I work with, students and staff included. We are like a family and we all work as a team very well. I do have to admit that there aren't enough hours in a day to get everything we need to done. We only work 30 hours a week. So the hours are not enough to survive on as a single person. So I am looking to expand my horizons and work in a position where I can make enough money to pay off some bills and also save for school next year.

A typical day at work usually has a lot of laughter with students. You teach them basic and life skills through play, cooking, modeling acceptable behaviour and lifting their self-esteem. Co-workers are usually easy to get along with and we all share in our love for children with special needs. Hardest part of the job is fitting everything into the short hours we have them. It would be nice to be full time. The most enjoyable part of my job is seeing the smiles on the kids faces when they have learned something new or you have just made them feel good about themselves.

I work with disabled children. There are days when the schedule will be completely changed within minutes, this will depend on how the child (ren) are coping with the day once they come into school. For example if a child had a seizure before they came to school they are extra tired and unable to concentrate so we will rearrange their activities for the day.  I would have to help with their student who I was trained in working with; I will have to toilet and tube feed them. I also help other students with academic studies.

Had to work split shifts every day, as a spare driver you were given and had to learn a new route every day, had to know the kids names which was difficult as you had a different bus/route each day, had to "thaw" the bus out twice a day before driving it in the winter, time consuming prechecks and after checks for every single trip (morning and afternoon). I found Office staff to be too much of a "clique". The most enjoyable part of the job for me was the kids and the driving.

Working for the school district has been beneficial even though I was on call there is always a chance to find permanent full time employment. As well as the perks of being part of a union.

I have worked as an educational assistant for 3 years now and love it. I am in school to become a teacher and think this job will help me when it comes to being a teacher and how to best support the kids

The job is great but has too many holidays per year and not conducive  for a single parent family.

Wage is decent, pension and benefits are great. The staff are friendly and welcoming,

While the location may worry some, the teaching community is excellent and extremely supportive. It was a great place to get started in my teaching career and I wish I had been able to stay longer.

I enjoyed working as a casual custodian, the people you work with are all good, the work is fast paced as there is lots to accomplish, and there is opportunity to advance if you want full-time.

Some principals are great, others are terrible.  There are lots of great people who want the best for the students.  I loved my job, but I found the moving of admin to be hard on staff and students.
