Symcor

I worked at Symcor from 2000 until 2017 and was given an early retirement.
Four months later, I was called back to serve as SME as my experience was required for a minimum of 1 week and ended up staying for almost 4 months.
Overall, I had a great experience working at Symcor and had excellent relations with my coworkers and being in IT Support, Information Security as well as Project Management/Deployment.

No employer is perfect and I can say there were some jobs there that were not pleasant. I tried to keep a positive spin at all times, participated in employee activities as well as being the company Santa Claus to deliver toys at Christmas for many years.

I left on good terms and being in the payment item processing industry, it was expected that the jobs would disappear as check payments went down in numbers in the years I worked there.

The staff reductions were expected and necessary and when asked to temporarily return, I gladly did on a part time basis.

If I were to be called back to resume a part time function, I would gladly consider it.

This is the best way to explain my overall view of Symcor.

Daily routine starts with checking emails and outstanding cases, sorting assigned work, prepare faxes to be sent. I learned how to use the company's multiple in-house applications that correspond to every research/investigation. I developed my expertise in resolving complex problems and ability to make decisions on missing, paid twice and encoding error bill payments and  cheques. Also I learned how to perform accounting duties such as prepare bank drafts, and issue debit, credit & other vouchers to balance and resolve discrepancies. I provide accurate results to clients by mail, fax, email or by phone. The Management practice diversity and treats all employees fairly. The company is very competitive with other financial industry. The hardest part of my job was adjusting to deal with difficult clients which I manage to them handle well and when the level of work decline due to the impact of  the on going changing of product and technology. What I enjoyed the most part of the job is continuous learning and growing and sharing and teaching my knowledge to other junior colleagues and provide service and verbally communicate with different clients.

- With minimal supervision and direction, my day would start off with instructions on what tasks need to be completed by the end of the day.
- I learned that, in this particular work environment, working with important and confidential data, it is okay to find shortcuts to get the job done, however, not all shortcuts are reliable. Sometimes taking the long route is the only way to get the job done perfectly.
- With very little change of plans and/or distractions, I was able to create an efficient system that worked for me and helped with the productivity for the day.
- My co-workers were very helpful with guiding me through the process. They gave me tips on the systems that they used to get the job done to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
- The hardest part of the job was only the physical aspect or it. Although being seated all day, the posture of the body (back, neck, shoulders, etc.) would cause straining in some areas along with minor headaches here and there.
- The most enjoyable part of the job was that I don't mind all the paperwork. While working at my own pace (which is quite fast), I had the chance to mingle with my co-workers to help pass the time.

Key multiple fields of data from images for GBS Business channels/customers and other Symcor applications. Ensured complete understanding of multiple GBS Applications and the respective client requirements therein. Maintained a high level of productivity based on the application productivity standards – measured in keystrokes per hour and varying by application discipline. Conserved a high level of accuracy in each application giving special attention to minimizing client impact errors. Complete understanding of data entry instructions per client’s profile. ensured processing deadlines are met. Handle daily workflow to optimize utilization of GBS systems/applications. Maintained individual performance standards. Identified any/all quality issues within the GBS Data Entry application/customer statement/coupons reporting any issues to PSO of respective GBS business unit (BU). Delivered exceptional customer service through teamwork and quality commitments.

I worked there for 3 years before being let go as a result of restructuring.  Senior Management care very little about the people who actually do the work - they are more concerned for their own jobs and in particular - their status.  I had to do a lot of personal errands for my bosses - getting meals, coffee etc.   They had no idea of the work I was doing nor did they care as long as they were fed and watered - they should have hired a waitress.  The company is going through MAJOR change and it seems a lot of jobs that are here today could very well be gone tomorrow.  If you're not concerned about job security then go ahead and work here but if you are looking to build a career this definitely not the place to be.  While the world is moving to a paperless environment Symcor would not exist without paper - that's their business and its dwindling quickly.

Workload can be strenuous at times because of layoffs or talent leaving and management deciding not to back fill positions.

Project teams and Operational staff are great - very collaborative and supportive, but a lot of cut backs in the past few years have strained the overall culture. Pandemic hasn't made workplace culture better but it was declining pre-pandemic. It feels like too many valuable talent have left Symcor in the past 2 to 3 years. 

Great benefits and great opportunities for someone to build their career in a large organization with large corporate Clients from financial, insurance, utilities, etc.  




A typical night at work would be.  Chech to make sure all systems were running smoothly. spend 3 minutes greeting all the operators.  check e-mails. Print the ones that require follow up.  inquire, research investigate respond.  Management was good very understanding, willing to work with me until I got it right.  I was on my own most of the time to ensure proper functioning of the day to day operations.  Only when there was a problem i could not fix then management would intervene. My co-workers were great too, some were quite helpful and trustworthy.  The hardest part of the job was working night shift almost all the time.  The most enjoyable part of the job was working in  teams.  

Symcor has many great staff and flexible working conditions. Friendly environment with competent, caring and accountable management. Symcor offers competitive pay in the technology industry. I would recommend Symcor as an employer to friends. Symcor was created by three partner banks as an outsourcing solution to service their payment/data processing needs. Unfortunately as Symcor reaches it's 20th year in business, it finds itself struggling and losing its core business due to a major shift in consumer payment processing needs. Executive leadership has made some strides to acquire new business and revenue streams, but Symcor is in the middle of major downsizing and the future will see the company only in the statement printing, secured document archival and help desk business spaces.

My typical day at work was self management of the assigned tasks and deliveries. I became fully competent doing my responsibilites and escalating the unresolved issues to the management. I received very good cooperation from my management and other coworkers. All my coworkers and supervisors were very cooperative. We were able to understand each other. We fostered two way mutually understandable communication both in writing and verbal.
During the period of training it seemed a bit difficult to figure out all the process, however, I was very successful to handle the situation withing the stiputed time frame.
The most enjoyable part of the job was management was fully relying on my advice, suggestions and the responsibilities that I took were dependable.

If they change the system one day, all the works behind and we have to stay day and night to meet the deadlines.
I have learned lots of skills, system procedures, cheques processing with the system involment.
I work with quitet small workers , they also work together and corporate to finish the work on time.
If the system down , sometimes we have to reprocess the work whatever so far we sent through the system.
We have a happy moment during the christmas party, we all are enjoy with the departments.
