Wellington-Altus Private Wealth

I recently had the unfortunate experience of working with Wellington-Altus, and I feel compelled to share my dissatisfaction with their company. My interaction with the company left much to be desired, and I believe it's important for potential clients and employees to be aware of the issues I encountered.

First and foremost, the working culture at Wellington-Altus is nothing short of dismal. From my perspective, it appeared as though a toxic environment permeated the workplace. The lack of camaraderie among colleagues was palpable, and there seemed to be a distinct lack of support from management. The overall vibe within the company did little to foster a positive and collaborative atmosphere.

Furthermore, my disappointment extended to the compensation package for Advisors, which seemed to be disproportionately better than what other employees received. The apparent disparity in benefits and compensation only served to widen the gap between different roles within the organization, fostering an unhealthy sense of inequality and resentment among staff members.

In addition, it was disheartening to observe a distinct lack of transparency in the company's dealings. Information and updates were often withheld, leading to confusion and frustration among employees. Wellington-Altus could benefit greatly from implementing more open communication channels and promoting a more inclusive working environment.

Overall, my experience with Wellington-Altus was marked by a subpar working culture, unequal compensation structures, and a noticeable lack of transparency. I would strongly caution anyone considering employment or partnership with this company to thoroughly weigh the potential drawbacks before committing.

I’ve had a long tenured career in finance, and I’ve never worked anywhere that had such little benefits as Wellington-Altus. If you have an opportunity to work here, please consider the impact that this would have on you and your family. No RRSP/Pension/matching, no SPP but you can buy their inflated shares without matching (must be the first company in the world to not offer matching on this one), no Health Spending Account, no Health and Wellness account, no care/mental health days, no flexibility to WFH when sick or traveling! They offer no days off that are not mandated by the provincial government! I’ve seen some cases they make singular provinces work alone across the country because they weren’t mandated to give them the day…

The benefits/insurance that they DO provide are half employee paid!!!! So expect to be paying 150-200$ per month for that, and they will make you work on-site so expect to pay anywhere from 250-500/per month for that. 

I don’t know if they just have an army general as an HR department but this place is lagging by 10-15 years! Honestly it’s such a difference in value, that you are losing THOUSANDS on the benefits and personal care side coming to Wellington! If I had to do it again, I’d ask for 10k more just to cover my costs of working here, and flexibility to take unpaid “care” days when I need to. 

This is a tough environment and not advertised in the right ways. They call this place a rocket ship, but this is a tin can with a rocket tied to it. Startup culture sure, but most leader are there because they were in the room. A lot of people in charge, without the skills/know how to run things properly. 

If you are on the corporate side, be prepared for the costs of working at this place. Just for the “opportunity” of working here, you have to pay 240$ a month for parking, 150$ in insurance (mandatory), benefits is SUB-PAR so you will end up paying out of pocket a lot for you and your families needs. I’d advocate asking 5-10k above your target to compensate for how expensive it is to work here. No accommodation for WFH, in fact they despise it. They try boosting culture/morale but it’s all employee cost so not really a thing. Most companies are far-far ahead in terms of what they offer their employees, so just know the costs before you come here.

Fun fact, advisor teams get better benefits, HSA, RRSP and comp packages by a GOOD margin. This is only possible because they underpay corporate. You see this through their lavish dinners, executive trips, and yearly trips to Hawaii for Advisor teams. Inequality at its finest

Little to no opportunities for new grads or students. Tried referring some of my family, friends. Not really designed to be a place that develops its people. For those with families, or continuing that path, there’s NO maternity/paternity top up benefits! They’ll just be ready for you to come back and make them money again if you aren’t replaced. For those established in your career, you’ll be hard-pressed to find regular employees who stay here longer than a year or two. Lots of churn and burn, people are not meant to be grown or invested in here.. not care or wellness allowance either.

Its just sad because this place COULD be so much more, but there just nothing meaningful about working here. You are brought in to do a job, they will trying overworking you, and when you are burnt out. That’s it… they don’t put any effort into employee health/wellbeing/investment. Just the free stuff they have access to like phone plans and gym discounts. Those don’t cost them a dime…. Invest in your people and get back to me.

Been working here for a while, got contacted by a recruiter about the amazing opportunity and high growth at Wellington-Altus. In all truthfulness I was promised the sun, moon, and stars coming here. All to find out that it would be a MAJOR step back. I was sold on constant change, ability to make impact, and it’s been far from the truth. My job is so bound with constraints that I can’t foresee any opportunity for me to make this a meaningful transition. The head office in Winnipeg offers no amenities, there’s no flexible workstations, nice areas to sit/work. It’s IBM cubicles from the 80’s. I wish their Leadership team/HR team would visit a real startup like NEO/Nike/JET, and see what a real in-office environment looked like.  It’s 2024, this is just false advertising!!!

Fast paced environment without sustainability in mind. A lot of leaders in this company exist because they were there from when it started and not truly leaders. Very chaotic as there’s so many individuals who don’t have communication with their leaders.

A lot of people who work here don’t come from finance, they come from manufacturing and other related industries with the mindset of squeezing the most out of what resources they have. They don’t bring people in for their capabilities, they lowball them and try to maximize value.

I’ve worked for a lot of startups, environments that are growing rapidly in such a short time frame. This has got to be the worst one I’ve been a part of… typically in these types of true rapid growth succession environments. There’s a level of trust, accountability, and respect across its teams. Wellington is the opposite…. People are left handcuffed to their cubicles, no open workspaces/collaboration, and everything is bound by EC approval. Nothing gets done without 8 agreements across people not involved. This place is not a startup, rocket ship, this place is a below average finance firm, who can’t afford to provide a water bottle or hoodie for new employees. Consider a Neo, or JET if you are in the market for these types of environments! Can’t sharpen a pencil here without the CEOs say so!

Wellington-Altus is a perfect example of what "all that glitters is not gold" means. It's a firm built by advisors, for advisors so if you are considering a career at this firm on any corporate team (HR, IT, Finance, Accounting etc.), don't! So much talk of unstoppable growth but it's mainly done through mergers and acquisitions of advisors from across the country. Terrible compensation package, no company culture, no care in the world for employees, hire and fire environment, sub par benefits, extreme parking costs; I mean, there is almost no benefit to working here. Take this advise from someone (me) who is on the way out thankfully!  Do not allow anyone sell the idea of this company to you. Incompetent leadership everywhere, terrible retention (high turnover), the list goes on and on. Save yourself the stress and look elsewhere.
