Algonquin College

Algonquin provides amazing growth opportunities and services to its workers to help them succeed. The managers are very receptive to feedback and are compassionate when an employee is having a bad day. The job was simple, and if a person wanted, the managers gave multiple opportunities to assume more responsibility. Overall, management was wonderful to work with and a definite plus.

On the opposite side, the full-time and part-time support staff tended to be negative. Many of the full-time employees abused their power to extend their breaks or make the part-time employees do all the work. Now, to be fair, many of the part-time employees would not do any work unless a full-time employee or manager babysat them. Many full-time employees didn't see the hypocrisy of their treatment of the part-time employees. The full-time would complain about their two breaks being too far apart, but in the same breath, say the part-time shouldn't get a break during a 5-hour shift because it would inconvenience them. All employees also tended to blame management, even if the error was not management's fault.

The main takeaway from this review is that Algonquin is a good place to work with many career pathways. The management is wonderful, and the individuals are kind as well. The main negative is the culture surrounding Full-time and Part-time employees. The college needs to show it values its part-time employees rather than treating them like replaceable cogs in its machine. 

I worked for Algonquin College as part of its Student's Association for just over three years while living and attending classes in Ottawa. I worked at the Starbucks most frequently, but got to be part of some of the events that were put on by the establishment as well. I always loved this job and was so excited when I saw the opportunity to work with Algonquin College at the Pembroke Campus, where I now live. Since beginning my position in Food Services in January, I feel great. The management is understanding, they will answer any questions you have, they try to work with you and truly take your ideas into consideration for improvements. I always feel heard and understood. I am do blessed to have a job that pays so well, but also leaves me with some energy to go home with and fun stories to remember with customer and staff interactions. I can't wait to see what the future holds when covid restrictions lift and we finally pick up! Excited for the "Starbucks Hustle" that I experienced in Ottawa, but now with some delicious food!

Typically, a day would include: Processing documents to be shipped, loading a cart with said documents in order of drop, walking all over campus in an efficiently planned manner to deliver documents, customer relations with office admins.

I learned a lot about what goes on in a print shop, and how to diffuse difficult customer relations issues with the main body, by being an open ear, and with a friendly output.

Management was easy going, but very astute when it came to the inner workings of the college office culture. The latter was a huge help, as far as knowing how to communicate with individual customers, and making sure everyone was happy at the end of the day.

Co-workers were hard working, friendly, and helpful when times got busy (e.g. exams).

The hardest part was walking for 4+ hours a day, pushing a sometimes 200lb cart all over the campus; a large campus.

I made great connections with my clients. Some were visibly sad to see me get laid off. I miss those people very much. That sentiment alone attests to my service/client relationships.

Typical day would start with a prepared to do list for the day. These would include checking and following up with mail. Sorting and adding new students for different sessions. Reviewing professors schedules on a spreadsheet and organizing their seminars, which included, formatting textbooks for proper courses that later on would need to be ordered for print. Filing documents, preparing billing templates, scanning forms and mailing out, preparing Excel formulas to tally up professor ratings from students, maintain clientele data and their contact information, etc. 

My managment always kept me busy and assisted when needed, very pleasant environment.  

I learned to prioritize, manage and organize large amounts of duties that needed to be fulfilled by the end of the day.

My co-workers were all very warm and always helpful when needed.

The hardest part of the job was getting in touch with other parties to schedule group seminars.

The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to help, and learning new ideas from professors.

My time with this organization was "challenging" to say the least, a bunch of old women in the PM/BRM team seem to dictate everything within IT, from information security, infrastructure, to the rest of the organization.  The worst part is that these women have absolutely no idea what they're doing, yet they're dictating everything.  Their own dept is a mess and don't get along very well at all, they're just rude and downright unintelligent.

The IT managers, directors, and above seem to have zero control or interest in changing anything.  It's just a complete and utter mess of an organization.

I would not recommend this college if you want to do good work, but if you want to take things slow, not really care, and want to just collect a paycheque, or just have everything dictated to you by a bunch of old crows despite their lack of understanding then this place is for you.

I liked working here just fine  The pay is great and, if you're full time and qualify for them, benefits are good.  No benefits if you start in part time, and if you do you'll probably be part time for a few years at least. Work is very clear and there are usually supports in place if you need them.  Campus itself is beautiful and the events you have access to through employment there are huge in number. 

The individual departments have good morale and friendly team interactions, everyone seems to enjoy their past and present team members. 

Algonquin is a very large business and with that comes obvious communication challenges.  Due to the semestered nature of college, there are regular busy times throughout the year and you WILL answer the same questions every 3 months. It's somewhat tedious but honest work for more than adequate pay.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I would be an easy employee to train, and an excellent time management to complete different tasks in a very short time. My empathy is a key role to make my interaction with others much easier. By looking on my to-do list every morning, I get started on the project that have my top priority.

- I was responsible individually to design and produce the branding and the marketing logo and website for the Interior Design Graduation Show of 2011 of Algonquin College. This even is one of the most prestigious events for graduates of interior design to establish strong networking with design firms in the industry. I was also responsible for sending out invitations.
- I learned how to relate my education experience into real working project. I used my photography skills to produce artistic black and white photos of each student.
- I had to be working for long hours since I was managing the project in my own.
- Long hours.
- I loved the look of all my professors and professionals when they saw what I have came up with. I also got the appreciations of the students for presenting them professionally to their future potential employees.

Just awesome. Great people. Positive, encouraging atmosphere. 
Start the day with a daily meeting to assign daily tasks, as determined by supervisor. I learned little, as I had all the skills required for all tasks asked of me. I mostly learned about college politics lol. 
The management was good, while there were stereotypical complaints, nothing dramatic happened. We had a fairly clear idea of what we needed to do within the college.
My co-workers were good. Kept me going at a good rate.
The hardest part was leaving. I knew I had too, but I didn't want too. However no long-term positions were available.
The most enjoyable part was interacting with other departments. We all had our trade specific jokes we over played, but it was fun.

Emphasis on contract lecturers.  Only paid for class teaching time.  Unfairness is that I was expected to create a new course with no textbook, no support, and was expected to source the information, design, build the course, then teach it.  Get paid though, only two hours per week, because that is the amount of "teaching time".  That is exploitive.  The course where there is a textbook and outline with resources, is thus more fairly compensated based on time spent to deliver the course, but still not fair pay for work.  This is permissible for contract professors, this is typical I understand.  Good experience and good for resume building, but you cannot earn a living as a contract lecturer.  I had another full time job.
