Associated Engineering

The company emphasizes teamwork, support, and growth, but is a typical corporation with an obvious engineering-first focus. Non-engineering roles are overlooked and neglected. Leadership is heavily project-focused, with little attention to people management, processes, or accountability. Support and direction were consistently lacking.

Several management decisions were concerning. WFH approvals were arbitrary and unfair, with clear favoritism. During a stay in the hospital my timecard was filled out without consent by management, using my vacation time because they "didn't want me to have to worry about money". Management subtly tried to pressure me to take fewer bereavement days than entitled. 

Onboarding and training were essentially nonexistent. I had to teach myself the role. It took two years to be flown to Edmonton for what is supposed to be first months basic training, which was scheduled at a difficult time despite clear communication of personal and medical circumstances.

Initial compensation was reasonable but raises were very small and infrequent yet spending on executive travel, meetings, and catering was noticeable. I never received formal feedback, performance reviews, or meaningful development opportunities, and there was no clear path for advancement.

Workloads were consistently unsustainable, processes were not enforced, and non-engineering teams remained understaffed and roles were not backfilled while engineering hiring remained constant. Burnout did not appear to be a concern. 

New hires are brought in with no experience and compensated nearly the same while receiving opportunities others were denied. Termination methods include baiting employees into meeting rooms with HR waiting, giving minimum severance, and dodging questions with vague corporate speech.

I left feeling undervalued, unappreciated, and completely used. Would not recommend this company. Especially for non-engineering positions.

You will work on a  lot of different project, small, medium and large size. So that in itself is a good learning exposure. However due to the nature of the corporate company you might find yourself in  a set role down the road. You will be responsible do one thing and that might be the main and only thing you do for the most part (which limits your learning). As a typical corporate place, they will have people for each  specific task to work on and be expert in it. Engineers will get the priority over technologists, but this is common for most large engineering places. Teams are pretty large so again, you will find yourself down the food chain against senior stuff.  Overall friendly people to work with and good culture all around.  There is an opportunity to learn and grown but you will need to be patient for the first few years. 

Workload was fair, and consistent, sometimes too low for my liking. Pay was good, with potential to get better each year.  Vacation and sick days were good, standard for the most part. Benefits are decent, standard for the most part.

Overall, it is a proper good large company with mainly industrial like projects. So it is not super exciting but it will give you a good experience to grown career. 

Pros:
The company strongly advocates for an inclusive culture and employee engagement, and these values are apparent in day-to-day operations. There are commendable initiatives like employee development programs and a young professionals group, which demonstrate a commitment to fostering growth and collaboration within the organization.

Cons:
For mid-level professionals, particularly those in non-engineering roles, there may be challenges in navigating the working environment. The pace of change within the organization, as well as its adoption of newer technologies and career advancement opportunities, tends to be slow. This can make it difficult for those outside of engineering disciplines to find clear growth paths or achieve their full potential.


Associated Engineering is a very strong honest and ethical engineering firm with lots of history; and a deep client list.

I was hired by two excellent staff; who unfortunately retired. 

Company ownership is generally promised after a 2 or 3 year introduction. Unfortunately; much of the current management are elites (not all mind you); and therefore new company ownership opportunities are limited, AE is very much an “old boys” club.  

Best engineering firm that I have ever worked with; however company departures are provided with zero notice; and under a “one strike, your out” basis, like much of the rest of Alberta.

sometimes they have food and their desks are not that bad. They have decent resources for learning

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
- People talking behind your back (happens all the time). The managers at this company will stab you in the back once you aren't bring in money. Every conversation is recorded and will be used against you. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work culture is best described as a fake small talk. They will give you a smile every morning and good conversation but behind the scenes they are plotting against you. 
They pretend they are your friend and want the best for you but the whole system is designed to bring in the most money for shareholders.

Associated Engineering is a consulting engineering firm which provides design and planning services for either the private or public sector.

A typical day could have been a variety of activities, including meeting with the client to discuss and plan the project, meeting with the engineering design team to coordinate work, or performing detailed design analysis.

The projects were highly interesting, the team was intelligent and outgoing, and at the end of the day there was concrete work that you could be proud of.

Great company to work with. Team effort is very good and everyone in the team complements each other in every way possible. Safety of workers is paramount in the workplace. Management made sure that you have all the tools and equipment necessary to perform your duties effectively and efficiently. The hardest part of the job is working thru winter

No feeling, and no comments on it.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Short meeting and looking for work.

You will be wasting your time at this place as a technologist. Unless you like not learning. Their ad should state "Tracers please apply".
I gave the job security 4 stars because they where just glad you where stupid enough to stay around.

I like the company and all my colleagues.

Management is a bit conservatives and do not take any risk.

The location of the offices is very good.


People are very polite and the work environment is pretty good.
