BATL Axe Throwing

My experience working at BATL was extremely disappointing and stressful. I personally felt that the management was consistently rude, unprofessional, and dismissive of employees’ concerns. The overall work environment often felt uncomfortable, and there were moments where I witnessed behavior among staff that I believed to be inappropriate or unprofessional. This made the workplace feel unsafe and poorly supervised. One of the most upsetting parts of my experience was how management handled my request for time off after a family member passed away. I asked for a single day off during a very difficult time, and because I was unable to find someone to cover my shift, I was terminated. Being fired while dealing with a loss felt incredibly insensitive and showed me how little compassion or flexibility management was willing to offer.

Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend BATL as a supportive or respectful workplace. I hope that management takes steps to create a safer, more empathetic, and more professional environment for future employees.

I worked for BATL for about seven years and I worked my way up from Coach to General Manager. My Regional Manager was generally awesome, but overworked. When I started as a GM there were about seven members of Head Office, including Regional Managers, HR, Marketing, etc. But when I left, the Head Office team was effectively three people - one HR person (who didn't have an HR background), one Regional Manager/Operations Director, and the COO. This meant that a lot of things fell through the cracks, and the company generally felt incredibly disorganized.

The job itself was awesome, especially if you foster a good team at your location. Unfortunately, if you disagree with the COO at all, you're basically blacklisted while the "Yes men" get rewarded. I tended to be outspoken, which my RM was fine with and seemed to understand where I was coming from, but the COO wasn't a fan. As such, once he was able to find a reason to let me go, I was terminated without coaching, which the company assured us would never happen. 

Management was terrible. The General manager would completely disregard any requests from guests right in front of them, and would hand off the simplest of tasks to a crew member. The pay listed on job sites was at least minimum wage, but I learned very quickly that I was being severely underpaid for the amount of hours that I was working. The job itself was incredibly easy, but it was also draining. For training I had no actual training, and I had to figure out EVERYTHING by myself. I also had to train a fair amount of the staff in certain areas, and I never got any sort of extra pay or benefits from this. After applying for a higher position, my application was rejected because of ONE TIME that I had called out due to an emergency.
Overall, do not work here if you value fairness in the work place and good management.

The staff and management within the venues are FANTASTIC. The job is fast, fun and worth the effort if you need part time work that keeps you busy. The work team is always fun and friendly. 
However-the bigger picture-for anyone who has worked there long enough saw the company grow too quickly and they lost sight of their core values. It is not longer about building community within your area but is now just a money making structure with minimal customer interactions. 
Currently- its basically like working in a bowling alley. 
Also if you are female you may experience some glass ceilings when trying to grow within the company. 
Basically, it's a great part time gig, a good way to work with cool people, but I would not recommend staying long term with the company currently. 

Atypical day at work involves putting on multiple hats a dealing with issues as they arise. I was looking forward to a promotion when my General Manager Quit but now some other guy from a different location took a pay cut to get the role. I do most of the heavy lifting, put together the new point-of-sale system, pricing and co-ordinate events. Management looked over me to keep there bottom line. The workplace culture is awful, I was told I would be getting the position. They do not commit to the promises they make. The most enjoyable part is the staff discount where I get to throw in leagues for 50% off.

My experience working here was disappointing overall. I was initially hired for one location but later reassigned to another much farther away, which significantly increased my commute and expenses without any adjustment in pay. This made the job difficult to justify financially. Communication about scheduling and location changes could have been handled much better. The only real positive was the free staff drink per shift, but that didn’t make up for the added costs and inconvenience.

I am a paramedic back home. There were additional duties being opened for health and safety. With my previous experience in first aid I thought surely I would be given the duties. I missed out on the additional pay for the role but overtime ended up with the responsibilities anyway. The hardest part of the job was continuing to work for a manager who clearly played favorites. The General Manager passed the duties to one of his little girls with zero experience. 

Management is always blaming down instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. No room for promotions. Dictatorship. 

They tried a program to expand services offered by introducing golf, archery and a very noisy pneumatic gun. I do not think kids belong in this environment. They were unruly, wouldn't listen to safety and I had to kick parents out on multiple occasions.



This is a fantastic side job if you like casual or on-call work, though not something to rely on for lots of hours as your shifts are based on how many bookings there are.
Absolutely love this job, it always leaves me in a better mood than when I got there. If you don't know how to throw axes yet, they'll teach you, so don't worry! The staff is all so welcoming, plus the tips and perks are great as well.

BATL is an amazing place to work. I love working there, I have fun every time I go there, all the other employees are amazing and really help you get better at the job. Some days are a little bit slower, others are more fast-paced. On your typical day, you will teach people how to throw axes, serve drinks and help clean the arena and change the targets if necessary.
